The men's competition at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, held at Coney Island every Fourth of July, was delayed after stormy weather moved in.
ESPN tweeted at around 12:30 p.m. EDT that the event was delayed due to "inclement weather." The contest resumed around 2 p.m.
There were also reports of someone struck by lightning in the area, according to the National Weather Service. Video from the scene showed an ambulance and police at the scene.
A special weather statement was issued for the area warning of the possibility of winds greater than 39 mph and the potential for hail.
Before the delay, defending champion Miki Sudo consumed 39 1/2 hot dogs and buns to claim a ninth women's title.
Champion Joey “Jaws” Chestnut had to wait until the competition resumed to win a 16th title in the men's division.
Besides the U.S., contestants came from England, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Brazil and Australia for the annual showdown.
