 Published: November 12, 2020

At least nine people were injured in a pileup involving 29 vehicles during a snow squall in Minnesota Thursday morning.

The incident happened on Interstate 94 near Monticello, Minnesota, about 40 miles northwest of downtown Minneapolis.

More than half the vehicles involved were semi trucks, Minnesota State Patrol Sgt. Jesse Grabow said on Twitter. Grabow said nine people with minor injuries were transported from the scene by ambulance. The incident happened just before 9 a.m. and shut down the interstate in both directions. The westbound lanes were still closed as of 4 p.m. CST.

Crews were working to clean up wreckage, which included a burnt vehicles and a load of tractor tires.

An earlier update from Grabow showed at least one semi on fire.

The National Weather Service issued a snow squall warning for the area to warn of extremely poor visibility in the band of heavy snow.
