Winter Storm Spreading Snow and Damaging Ice From Rockies Into the Plains

An early-season winter storm will continue to spread snow and damaging ice from the southern Rockies into parts of the Southern Plains through Tuesday night

This weather system has been named Winter Storm Billy by The Weather Channel.

On Monday, ice accumulations from this storm contributed to tree damage and power outages in parts of central and southwest Oklahoma. Just over 100,000 customers were without power in those areas as of Tuesday morning.

The winter storm is bringing snow and ice from New Mexico into the Southern Plains right now.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories from New Mexico into the adjacent Southern Plains, including parts of West Texas and Oklahoma. An ice storm warning is also in effect from a part of northwest and West Texas into southwest, central and northern Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City.

Forecast

Snow and ice from this storm will continue through Tuesday night and into early Wednesday from New Mexico and West Texas to northern, central and western Oklahoma and southern Kansas. Wintry travel conditions are expected in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Lubbock, Texas, Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kansas.

Areas from northwest Texas into southwest, central and northern Oklahoma could see damaging ice accumulations.

Tuesday's Forecast

The greatest chance of significant ice accumulations is in the ice storm warning area from northwest Texas into southwest, central and northern Oklahoma. In addition to slippery travel, the ice could damage some trees and trigger power outages, including in the Oklahoma City metro area.

Additional snowfall accumulations will be heaviest from parts of eastern New Mexico into West Texas.

Additional Snow Through Tuesday

This storm will begin to wind down on Wednesday, but snow and ice could linger in parts of New Mexico, the Texas Panhandle, western Oklahoma and southwest Kansas. Some areas like central Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City, will see the wintry precipitation change to rain.

This system will likely produce at least 6 inches of additional snow across New Mexico and parts of the adjacent Southern Plains through Tuesday.

Here's a look at some of the top totals and notables from this winter storm beginning Friday and ending Monday.

Washington

-Spokane picked up 7.5 inches of snow at the airport. This is now Spokane's snowiest October on record dating back to 1893.

Idaho

-Top total of 9.7 inches near Huetter.

Montana

-The state's top total was 25 inches just southwest of Helena. The official total in Helena was 17.6 inches, which is the sixth heaviest two-day snowfall on record there.

-Great Falls picked up 11 inches, which helped boost the city to its snowiest October on record.

The temperature plunge that followed Winter Storm Billy completely obliterated at least one low temperature record. Bozeman, Montana, fell 31 degrees below its previous record low on Oct. 26.

Wyoming

-Up to 9 inches reported in the Cheyenne area.

The winter storm moved into the Central and Southern Plains and the Southern Rockies on Monday, bringing a wide swath of snow from New Mexico to Missouri, while coating central and southwestern Oklahoma in ice.
