Stormy, Stuck Pattern Brings Days of Rain to the South, Midwest and Plains, But Drier Conditions Are on the Way

A stagnant weather pattern with rounds of heavy rain-producing thunderstorms has soaked parts of the Midwest, Plains and South this week, but drier conditions are finally on the way.

This soaking setup is from a stalled north-to-south frontal system over the central U.S. and another slow-moving upper low setting up over the South. Flash flooding and localized severe weather has occurred in this weather pattern since Memorial Day weekend.

Flood and Severe Weather Threat

Today, scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible from the South to the Great Lakes and mid-Atlantic. Localized flash flooding could occur in parts of those regions.

A few strong to severe thunderstorms may also develop, particularly from Texas to the lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast.

Current Radar, Watches and Warnings

This weather system will finally make steady progress eastward Friday into Saturday.

On Friday, showers and thunderstorms could affect areas from the Northeast into the Ohio Valley and Southeast. The bulk of the central U.S. will begin to dry out.

Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across interior areas of the Northeast on Friday afternoon and evening. Damaging winds and hail are the main concerns, but an isolated tornado threat cannot be ruled out.

Friday-Friday Night Severe Thunderstorm Forecast

Some lingering showers and storms will still be possible Saturday along the immediate East Coast before this storm departs out into the Atlantic. Most other areas will enjoy drier conditions for the weekend.
