A potential bomb cyclone will spare much of the East Coast late this week, but southeastern New England might get scraped with high winds and snow as the system curves toward Atlantic Canada Friday and Saturday.
A strong jet stream disturbance with colder air will move across the Great Lakes and Northeast through Friday. The jet stream disturbance will bring light rain and snow to the region.
Expect light snow or a rain-and-snow mix in parts of the interior Northeast on Friday. Rain is expected near the Interstate 95 corridor during that time.
But the bigger story will be a strengthening area of low pressure off the East Coast on Friday. If the central pressure of this system drops at least 24 millibars in 24 hours, as some computer forecast models are suggesting, it would undergo bombogenesis, a term used to describe rapidly strengthening areas of low pressure.
The current forecast track of that low-pressure system is expected to be far enough east to prevent it from bringing significant impacts to most of the Northeast, but parts of southeastern New England, including Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, could get brushed late Friday into early Saturday.
The main impacts in southeastern New England would be high winds and a brief shot of snow, particularly Friday night, when the storm will make its closest pass to the northeastern U.S. coastline.
The National Weather Service has issued high wind watches and wind advisories for coastal southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Block Island, Rhode Island.
Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph are possible in these areas covered by watches and advisories.
Snowfall amounts are expected to be light in southeastern New England.
The highest totals are expected to be on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, where 2 to 4 inches of snow could accumulate between Friday evening and Saturday morning, mainly on grassy surfaces.
Lighter snowfall is possible farther inland to the south of Boston and in parts of Rhode Island, with amounts generally an inch or less.
