Multiple storms to slam UK with wind, rain into mid-December

Updated Dec. 5, 2019 9:34 AM

A series of storms from the Atlantic will bring frequent bouts of unsettled weather to the United Kingdom into next week.
The first of these storms arrived on Thursday as gusty winds swept across the country. The storm will remain on the drier side, with rainfall limited to northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Heavy rainfall is expected across western Scotland where rainfall amounts of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) are possible and may lead to localized flooding during the afternoon and evening hours.
Most of the country can expect wind gusts of 20-30 mph (32-48 km/h) with locally higher gusts in northern locations.
Another storm will quickly arrive for Friday spreading a soaking rain and blustery showers across the country.
Wind gusts of 20-30 mph (32-48 km/h) will be widespread throughout the daytime hours.
Even more wind and rain is expected to return Saturday afternoon, and continue into Monday.
This storm is expected to bring the strongest winds of the week, with widespread gusts of 40-60 mph (65-96 km/h) from Scotland and Northern Ireland to southern England.
Wind gusts of 60-70 mph (96-112 km/h) are possible in western facing shores of the British Isles.
"An AccuWeather Local StormMax™️ of 80 mph (128 km/h) is possible on the windward facing shores or in the highest elevations," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty.
The strongest winds are likely to occur on Sunday, Douty added.
A six-hour period of steady to heavy rainfall is expected Saturday night followed by blustery showers on Sunday.

The stormy weather will persist next week as a storm affects the country Tuesday into Wednesday bringing more rain and gusty winds.
Colder air arriving with this storm may help produce accumulating snowfall to the higher elevations of northern England and Scotland.
Yet another storm is forecast to follow during the second half of next week, bringing the chance of more gusty winds and downpours.
The repeated rounds of rainfall will increase the risk of flooding by next week with locations in southwestern England, Wales, northwestern England and western Scotland at highest risk.
