Passenger captures scary moment from plane just before scrambling to evacuate

Updated Oct. 21, 2019 11:05 AM

Memphis International Airport felt the punch of a round of severe weather and tornadoes that continued ripping through the southern United States since damaging Dallas, Texas, on Sunday night.
Photos and videos throughout social media have depicted airport passengers being evacuated and scurrying for shelter early on Monday morning.
Rain and wind whip against the window as a plane begins to rock in a video captured by a passenger moments before being shuffled into an emergency shelter.
After passengers were allowed to return, they were forced to go back through screenings, which caused widespread frustration at the long lines. The airport tweeted at 8:15 a.m. CDT that while "minor damage was sustained, the worst of the weather has now passed and normal operations have resumed at MEM."
About 35 miles away in Tyronza, Arkansas, local news stations reported extensive damage and multiple injuries. According to Poinsett County Sheriff Kevin Molder, several buildings were blown away, including a Valero gas station.
"Don't go looking for damage, we have trees and power lines down all across town," Molder said, according to KAIT. "We need all the help we can get."
"We got hit hard," Fire Chief David Woods told KAIT. "We don't know how hard yet."
In response to the destruction, East Poinsett County Schools were canceled on Monday.
In Memphis, reports of widespread damage have slowly trickled in throughout the morning.
Multiple social media users shared pictures and videos of the damage dealt to the Memphis International Airport, including one user who shared live updates of passengers being escorted to the nearest restrooms for shelter.
According to poweroutage.us, over 32,000 customers with the Memphis Light Gas and Water Division are without power at 8:30 a.m. CDT.
While no injuries or deaths have been reported yet in Tennessee, an earlier fatality was reported in northwestern Arkansas from the storms when a tree fell on a home. In Tyronza, at least two people were taken to the hospital with injuries.
