Outbreaks of showers, gusty winds to continue across the UK through October

Updated Oct. 11, 2019 12:28 PM

The beginning of October was filled with several storm systems bringing showery conditions and blustery winds to northwestern Europe, and no end appears to be in sight.
The wet pattern persisted on Friday as a steady to heavy rain fell across much of Wales and England with rainy spells throughout Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Wind gusts of 20-40 mph (32-64 km/h) accompanied the rain across Northern Ireland, Wales and England.
The cold front associated with this storm is expected to linger over southern parts of the region through the start of the weekend.
On Saturday, a plume of moisture moving along the front will produce more rainfall across Wales and southern England before a more widespread rain falls across the U.K. on Sunday.
Total rainfall of 25-75 mm (1-3 inches) is expected in Wales and southern England with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 100 mm (4 inches).

This magnitude of rainfall on top of the recent wet weather will result in some streams overflowing their banks and also cause flooded roadways resulting in travel disruptions. Saturated soil and locally strong winds may also result in downed trees and power cuts.
Leaves downed by the gusty winds will increase the risk for urban and street flooding due to clogged drains and can also result in slick driving conditions.
Residents looking for a break in the wet weather will be disappointed with very little change expected in the forecast through October.
"The pattern looks to remain active through the rest of the month," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys. "We also can't rule out one or two windstorms."
High pressure anchored over southern and eastern Europe will bring warmer and drier weather to these areas while also keeping the storm track over northwestern Europe.
In this type of pattern, the steadiest rain will be most common in western Wales, northwestern England, western Scotland and into Northern Ireland.
"The risk for localized flooding, especially from high rivers, will be highest in these areas," added Roys.
Persistent rounds of rain over the next couple of weeks can be beneficial and help to erode the drought conditions that have been developing in the drier conditions of the past year.
