Another storm in Middle East may threaten additional flooding in Iran

By Courtney Spamer, AccuWeather meteorologist

Following deadly flooding, more heavy rain is forecast by the end of the week across the Middle East.
A storm moving through the eastern Mediterranean Sea into Friday night will bring periods of rain and some mountain snow with it to southern Turkey, northern Syria and far-northern Iraq.
Ahead of the wet weather, windy conditions are likely to bring blowing dust on the southern side of the storm, including locations in southern Iran to Saudi Arabia. Blowing sand and dust could create reduced visibility, as well as poor air quality for periods of time from Saturday to Monday.
Spotty showers and thunderstorms will also develop during this time in the region.
Through the weekend, this storm will become stronger and move eastward, bringing the steadiest wet weather from Jordan and Lebanon to Iraq and western Iran.

"The storm will be slow-moving, allowing for repeated rounds of rain to pile up over several days," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Houk.
Southeastern Turkey could be one of the worst-hit areas. Through Monday, rainfall amounts will likely total 75-150 mm (3-6 inches), with higher amounts up to 250 mm (10 inches) possible.
"Snow in the higher elevations of eastern Turkey could total as high as 30 cm (12 inches)," Houk added.
Rain will also make a major impact farther east across northern and eastern Iraq and Iran.
"Deadly flooding will again be a concern as rain and thunderstorms move through western Iran on Sunday and Monday," Houk said.
Widespread rainfall amounts of 150-300 mm (6-12 inches) are expected, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 450 mm (18 inches), especially in the hardest-hit areas across northern parts of the Zagros Mountains.

Military vehicles rescue people after flash flooding around the northern city of Aq Qala in Golestan province, Iran, Monday, March 25, 2019.

This event could further exacerbate lingering flooding issues following the heavy rain earlier this month.
At least 32 people were killed in southern Iran as a result of severe flooding that occurred on 25 March after a robust storm swept through the Middle East, according to Radio Farda.
With flooding reported in 28 of the 31 provinces in Iran, the number of people injured due to the storm rose to nearly 100.
