The first major tornado outbreak of the autumn occurred on November 4-5, 2022, and brought tornadoes to Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Through early on November 5th, there have been at least 19 reports of tornadoes. Survey crews will be looking at damage across multiple states to determine the exact number of tornadoes in the coming days.
Notable Reports
Mobile homes and powerlines have been downed in Calera, Oklahoma, or in Bryan County, in a possible tornado.
In Texas, winds have gusted as high as 60 mph in Addison, or in the Dallas metro area. Some large hail has also been reported in the DFW metroplex. An EF3 tornado with winds of around 160 mph moved northeastward from near Honey Grove and Powderly in Lamar County, in northeast Texas, to the Red River near Grant, Oklahoma, after 4 p.m. At least one person was injured in Choctaw County, Oklahoma.
A potentially strong tornado was spotted near Emory, Texas, after 5 p.m. CDT. The tornado approached Sulphur Springs before 5:30 p.m., but may have lifted near town.
An EF3 tornado touched down near Bogata, Texas, then moved northeastward through Idabel and Broken Bow, Oklahoma. A tornado emergency was issued for Idabel, Oklahoma at the time. The tornado has not been rated north of the Red River and the EF3 rating is only valid in Texas. At least one fatality has been confirmed in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, near Pickens about 36 miles north of Idabel.
A 90-year-old man was killed and later found in his home, according to Keli Cain, spokesperson for the state’s Department of Emergency Management.
Idabel, a town of about 7,000, saw extensive damage, Cain said. “There are well over 100 homes and businesses damaged from minor damage to totally destroyed,” Cain said.
Several tornadoes have also touched down in eastern Texas, including near Naples, Hughes Springs and Gilmer, Texas.
A second tornado emergency was issued for New Boston, Texas, before a tornado ripped through the western section of town. That tornado persisted into southwest Arkansas.
Late in the evening, an EF2 tornado struck near Sardis, Arkansas, ripping roofs off of several homes and damaging several others.
