Before and after: Aerial photos show unprecedented Northeast flooding

Updated Sep. 3, 2021 2:28 PM EDT

Parts of the Northeast have been left reeling after Ida caused catastrophic flash flooding and took at least 49 lives across five states – New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Connecticut.

Meanwhile, parts of Louisiana are continuing to pick up the pieces after Ida slammed into the state as a powerful Category 4 hurricane on Sunday, Aug. 29.

NOAA has conducted damage surveys in the wake of the storm, including aerial missions to capture the scope of the damage from the sky. These stunning images, many of them before-and-after photos, reveal the extent of the flooding, damage to communities and even how the landscape was reshaped by the storm.

Maxar Technologies also collected new high resolution satellite imagery on Sept. 2 showing historic flooding along the Raritan River in New Jersey New Jersey.
