New Year's Week Storm to Spread Rain and Snow From the Southwest to Plains and Midwest

An active weather pattern will continue as we countdown to the New Year next week with a new storm system set to spread snow and rain from the Southwest into the Plains and Midwest.

The West will get a teaser system on Saturday and Saturday night as a weaker system moves ashore with coastal rain and snow from the Cascades to the Sierra Nevada and the Rockies.

Then, the next widespread storm will arrive in California by Sunday night into Monday. From there, it will track through the Plains and Midwest into the middle part of next week.

Here's a broad overview of what to expect from this next system. Keep in mind that changes to this forecast are likely over the next few days since the exact track of this storm is still uncertain.

Sunday Night-Monday

Low pressure will enter California by late Sunday and then track inland across the Southwest through Monday.

Some much-needed rain and mountain snow is forecast as far south as Southern California, including in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas. Some minor flooding is possible, especially near burn scars from the most recent fire seasons.

Snowfall will also spread eastward across parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming on Monday.

Tuesday

This storm will become much better organized on Tuesday once it emerges east of the Rockies and taps into Gulf of Mexico moisture. That moisture will interact with cold air supplied by a high-pressure system over the Midwest and East.

The result will be the potential for a broad area of snowfall spreading from the Front Range of the Rockies into the Central and Northern Plains and Midwest. Significant accumulations of snowfall could hamper travel in these areas.

Farther south, rain and some thunderstorms will develop in the Southern Plains.

Keep in mind that the dividing line between areas that might see wintry weather, rain or a mix of both in the map below could shift north or south in future forecast updates.

Wednesday

Low pressure will track in the general direction of the mid-Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes by Wednesday of next week.

Accumulating snow will be possible to the north and west of where that low tracks. Right now, that includes areas from the Plains into the upper Midwest and the northern Great Lakes.

Rain and a few thunderstorms are currently anticipated across much of the South.

It's too early to provide any details on the forecast beyond Wednesday.

That said, some impacts from this storm might reach the East Coast on Thursday. Wintry weather could also linger in parts of the Midwest or Great Lakes.

Rain and Snow Amounts

Rainfall amounts through Monday will be generally less than an inch from the Bay Area to San Diego, but welcomed as the first substantial rainfall for some of these spots since the beginning of the rainy season.

This will not be a major snowfall producer as the storm moves inland, but will drop up to 6 inches of snow from Nevada to the Central Rockies. The higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada and the Colorado Rockies could see more than a foot of snowfall. More than 6 inches of snow may also fall in the mountains of Southern California.
