Published: December 26, 2020

An active weather pattern could result in delays for those traveling for Christmas into the weekend.

Fewer Americans than usual are expected to travel this holiday season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but as many as 84.5 million may still travel from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3, according to AAA.

Below, we take a look at what to expect each day across the Lower 48.

Saturday's Forecast

The low-pressure system in the West will slide eastward and high pressure will dominate the central and eastern U.S.

-East: A dry, chilly Saturday is anticipated in the East, with the exception of lake-effect snow in the eastern Great Lakes and some linger rain and snow showers in northern Maine. Temperatures will be far below average in the Southeast.

-Central: The Midwest and Plains will remain dry to start the weekend. Temperatures will be milder than average in the Plains and will moderate in the Midwest.

-West: The chance of rain will persist from Central California through Oregon and western Washington. Snow will continue to fall in the higher elevations of the Northwest and the northern Rockies. Highs will generally be near to above average.

-Central: Rain is likely in portions of the southern Great Lakes, with snow on the northern side of the precipitation in the Great Lakes. Temperatures will be near to above average.

-West: Rain and mountain snow will increase in California and Nevada, especially by Sunday night. Rain and snow showers will also continue in parts of the Northwest and Rockies. Highs will generally be near average.
