Latest crop report shows some good news for soybean farmers

Corn and soybean planting continued to move forward, according to Monday’s latest USDA Crop Progress compared to the average from 2014-18. However the condition of the corn planted remains unchanged from the previous week.

As with last week, just 59% of the corn was rated excellent or good from among the 18 key corn-producing states. However, soybean planting looks promising for the rest of June, according to an AccuWeather analysis.

“By June 23, the soybean planting numbers will be close to the 90 percentile and then they’ll likely finish up in the last week of June,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jason Nicholls said, adding that farmers are getting back on track with planting of soybeans as the end of the month nears.

The Crop Progress indicated 92% of corn was planted compared to the five-year average of 100% by this date. Soybean planting improved to 77% compared to the 2014-18 average of 93%.

One state, however, is still struggling with both corn and soybean planting. Just 68% of corn has been planted in Ohio – compared to a five-year average of 100% -- and just 46% of soybean planting has occurred vs. an average of 94%.

“Ohio has come to the front in terms of the most troublesome spot,” Nicholls said.
