Drought conditions have deteriorated to their worst conditions since 2013 across the country following a dry summer in the West, Northeast and Great Lakes.
Flash drought conditions persist in parts of Upstate New York, Pennsylvania, throughout New England, small portions of Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon and the northern and central Plains.
Drought often worsens during the summer and autumn months as domes of heat divert rainfall away from large sections of the country and the Lower 48 waits for the jet stream to return. But this year, the drought has reached levels not seen since September 24th, 2013.
The only real exception to the drought conditions is in the Southeast, which has been dealing with a barrage of tropical storms and hurricanes since this summer.
Parts of Iowa and Illinois have begun to recover in the last month from drought conditions as the jet stream begins to dip southward over the Midwest with the change of seasons.
The forecast remains wet across the Northwest over the next couple of days.
Here is where there could be some additional dents in drought conditions over the next 48 hours:
The Climate Prediction Center currently expects worsening drought conditions through the end of the year in the Plains and in California, while the Northeast and Northwest should improve by the end of the year.
