Hurricane Genevieve is hammering Mexico's southern Baja Peninsula with strong winds and heavy rainfall, and it could eventually send some moisture into the Southwest U.S.

A hurricane warning remains in effect for the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, including Los Cabos and the popular resort areas of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Hurricane conditions are expected in the warned area into Thursday.

Watch, Warnings

Tropical storm warnings extend some distance north up the southern Baja Pacific coast. A tropical storm watch extends up the Gulf of California side of the southern Baja to La Paz.

Winds gusted over 70 mph on Wednesday in the higher terrain south of the town of Cabo San Lucas, at the very southern tip of the peninsula. The Cabo San Lucas airport saw gusts to near 50 mph before the observation stopped reporting.

Heavy rain already triggered significant flash flooding around Cabo San Lucas, Wednesday afternoon. An automated rain gauge measured just over 42 millimeters - about 1.65 inches - of rain in just three hours in an area that only averages about 8.6 inches of rain a year.

While Genevieve's hurricane wind field isn't large, it is just large enough to bring hurricane-force wind gusts to parts of the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, including Los Cabos, into Thursday.

Rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches, with isolated totals of up to 12 inches, are expected in the southern Baja Peninsula, which will trigger dangerous flash flooding and mudslides.

High surf from Genevieve is also expected to spread up the coast of Baja California the rest of this week. Eventually, swells generated by Genevieve could reach Southern California by this weekend.

There is also an increasing chance Genevieve could send a surge of moisture into the Desert Southwest and California late this week or over the weekend. That might lead to an uptick in thunderstorm chances in these areas.

Current Storm Status and Projected Path

Genevieve's History

Tuesday, Genevieve became the second Category 4 hurricane of the eastern Pacific season. Its maximum sustained winds increased from 75 mph to 130 mph in the 21 hours ending 6 a.m. MDT on Tuesday. That easily met the rapid intensification criteria for a hurricane, an increase in wind speed of at least 35 mph in 24 hours or less.
