Cars were inundated with water and at least one person had to be rescued from a home as a flash flood emergency was declared for parts of Mississippi Wednesday morning.

flash flood emergency was in effect until 12:15 p.m. CDT for an area of northern Mississippi, including Pontotoc, Aberdeen and Okolona.

Photos posted to social media showed cars overcome by the floodwaters.

As much as 10 inches of rain fell in some areas.

"A band of heavy rain stalled over parts of five northeast Mississippi Counties Wednesday morning, dumping 5 to 10 inches of rain in just a few hours," weather.com senior digital meteorologist Jonathan Erdman said. "These stalled areas of rain associated with clusters of thunderstorms known as mesoscale convective systems are common in parts of central and southern U.S. in summer, and often produce dangerous, localized flash flooding."

At least one person was rescued from a home in Ecru, about 29 miles northwest of Tupelo, according to local storm reports. Police there said several roads were covered in water.

Flooding was also reported in Tennessee, where police in the town of Selmer said several areas were underwater and a bridge was closed.

The county 911 center in McNairy County, Tennessee had to be evacuated.

Erdman said thunderstorms are possible in the Deep South into the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
