Meteorologists warn that severe thunderstorms will spread across the Ohio Valley and Northeast for the start of the weekend. However, there will be several factors that will play a role in determining just how strong and widespread the storms become.
The evolution of the threat for severe weather on Saturday afternoon will be dependent on exactly how far a complex of rain and thunderstorms sweeping through the Great Lakes region into Saturday morning advances.
Thunderstorms started to fire up in northwestern Indiana on Saturday morning, prompting severe thunderstorm warnings northwest of Indianapolis.
At the same time, the thunderstorm complex moved through the Detroit metro area with damaging winds during Friday night, continued to charge eastward through southern New York state, northern and central Pennsylvania on Saturday morning.
The above radar image shows downpours pushing through much of New York and the northern half of Pennsylvania on Saturday morning.
"The area at risk for severe thunderstorms later in the day will likely set up along the southern periphery of where this complex traversed during the morning hours," AccuWeather Meteorologist Renee Duff said.
This will put areas generally along and south of Interstate 80 at risk for damaging thunderstorms during Saturday afternoon and evening. The severe weather dangers may extend as far to the southwest as Louisville.
"There is the potential for the storms to bring strong, potentially damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph, some hail and a flooding downpour through early Saturday night," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Carl Babinski.

A storm does not need to contain damaging wind gusts, hail or flooding to be dangerous.
"Regardless of the severity of the thunderstorms on Saturday, residents are reminded that any thunderstorm can produce potentially deadly lightning strikes, so making sure you seek proper shelter is very important," Duff emphasized.
