Temperature roller coaster to usher in much cooler air across the Northeast to close out May

Updated May. 30, 2020 7:17 AM

In the wake of a summerlike weather regime experienced across the Northeast over the past week, a dip in the jet stream will force cooler and less humid air southward from Canada to close out the month of May.

For those that opted to turn on their air conditioning units amid the heat and humidity in recent days, it will no longer be needed as cooler air filters in this weekend and into early next week.

In the wake of thunderstorm activity that rolled through the Northeast on Friday, conditions will turn noticeably cooler and less humid across the interior on Saturday.

Although cooler and less humid air will begin to filter in across the interior, another round of showers will target portions of Pennsylvania and upstate New York during the day.

This upcoming round of wet weather is not expected to feature the locally damaging wind gusts that some storms had on Friday.

Along the Interstate-95 corridor, one more day of summerlike temperatures are expected on Saturday. New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore, will all climb into the 80s once again Saturday before cooler weather filters in to close out the weekend.

Even the Boston metro area could approach 80 degrees Fahrenheit once again Saturday.

The core of the cool air mass will encompass the entire Northeast by Sunday. An expansive area of high pressure slated to settle in over the region will also help to promote partly to mostly sunny skies.

Mainly clear skies are expected to carry over into Sunday night as well, which may result in areas of patchy frost across the normally colder spots across the region. With the planting season well underway for many, precautionary measures may need to be taken in order to avoid any damage to sensitive plants.

For at-home gardeners, simply bringing any potted plants inside, or covering your garden with a tarp or blankets should protect plants until the sun comes up Monday morning. This isn't expected to be an exceptionally cold night, but it is coming fairly late in the season and on the heels of summerlike weather.

Temperatures will quickly rebound from the morning's low temperatures after sunrise on Monday, bringing an end to any plant-threatening conditions. Although the sunshine will rebound temperatures nicely into the afternoon, many locales will feature high temperatures on the order of 5-10 degrees below average to start out the month of June.

Cool weather will persist into Monday night as well, but increasing cloud cover associated with an approaching disturbance will limit temperatures from falling as low as the night before.

Along with the continued trend of cool weather into the day on Tuesday across the Northeast, wet weather is expected to make a return as well as a system slides into the region. Rainfall is expected to remain on the lighter side, as this storm system will not have an ample amount of atmospheric energy to work with.
