Stormy pattern to bring flash flooding to parts of Spain, France

As residents across Spain look to ease lockdown conditions across the country, the stormy pattern that settled over the region early in the month will continue to keep people indoors.

The unsettled pattern over Iberian Peninsula is forecast to continue this week as one storm spins over the Mediterranean and another storm approaches the peninsula.

A storm that tracked south of Spain this past weekend is forecast to meander over the Mediterranean Sea through the beginning of the week.

Once the storm moves over water, it will pull in more moisture and fuel areas of heavier rain across the Mediterranean region.

At the same time, another storm will be tracking toward the Iberian Peninsula from the northwest. This will bring a new round of showers and thunderstorms to Portugal and Spain into Wednesday.

These storms will work together to bring occasional downpours to northeast Spain, southern France and the Balearic Islands through Tuesday night.

"Rain will average 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) across parts of northeastern Spain, southern France, and parts of Italy," stated AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

Rain amounts are expected to reach upwards of 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) across far northeastern Spain and southern France where the heaviest rainfall is expected, according to Roys.

An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 125 mm (6 inches) will be possible in this area, especially into the eastern Pyrenees Mountains.

Areas of flash flooding can develop in low-lying and poor drainage locations across the peninsula, but northeastern Spain and southern France will be the most likely location for more widespread flooding.

Any thunderstorms that develop can produce flash flooding and locally strong wind gusts.

The continued wet weather will keep people inside as the country passes the one month mark of lockdown. Spanish officials have announced to relax the strict measures keeping children at home by the end of the month, reported BBC News.

Outside of afternoon showers and thunderstorms, drier conditions are expected to return to the area into the middle of the week.
