Divers have recovered the body of Gideon McKean, the 8-year-old boy who went missing a week ago along with his mother, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, after a canoeing accident on Chesapeake Bay.
Gideon's body was found about 2,000 feet from where his mother's was found on Monday, The Associated Press reported. Both were in about 25 feet of water, more than 2 miles south of the home in Shady Side, Maryland, where they had hopped in a canoe to retrieve a ball on April 2.
McKean was the daughter of the former lieutenant governor of Maryland, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, and a granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy.
Family members and police said McKean and Gideon had climbed into the canoe to retrieve a ball that had gone into the water, according to the Washington Post. They were apparently swept away in strong currents and gusty winds.
Winds gusted to 35 mph in that part of the bay on Thursday afternoon, and a small craft advisory was issued. The windier-than-usual conditions were caused by a strong Atlantic storm churning offshore farther to the north.
Overnight temperatures in the Annapolis area dipped to 48 degrees, while the water temperature in the bay was about 51 degrees.
The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the rescue effort the next day, but other agencies continued to search for the bodies.
"She was my everything," human rights lawyer David McKean said of his wife in a Facebook memorial on Friday evening.
He said the family was self-quarantining in an empty house owned by his wife's mother hoping to give their kids more space to run around than they had at their home in Washington, D.C. In addition to Gideon, the McKeans had two other children, 7-year-old Gabriella and 2-year-old Toby.
The tragedy is the latest to hit the seemingly cursed Kennedy family. Most notable were the assassinations of president John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert.
Maeve McKean was a public health and human rights lawyer who served as executive director of the Georgetown University Global Health Initiative.
“Maeve was a master connector who brought together faculty and students across disciplines and schools in order to advance our shared mission for improving health and advancing justice, particularly for those left out or left behind,” John Monahan, an adviser to Georgetown's president, said in a news release Saturday.
