Top 10 must-watch weather-related movies

By Staff, AccuWeather

The weather has always played an important part in the lives of humans. Even our entertainment world has been dominated at one time or another with fantastical tales centered around amazing weather occurrences and natural phenomena. You may think you have seen them all, but have you seen the best of the best weather-related movies of all-time? Find out with our top 10 list below.

10. The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

Based on the hit novel of the same name, the movie "The Poseidon Adventure" was released in 1972 and took the country by storm. During its final voyage, the fictional S.S. Poseidon faces off against a major tsunami caused by an undersea earthquake. It becomes a fight to stay alive as the ship is overturned and the crew and passengers are trapped inside.

9. Sharknado (2013)

Okay, hear me out before you start laughing. The hit (yes, a worldwide hit) "Sharknado" was released directly to the SyFy channel in 2013. Since then, the series has spawned five sequels that continue to make money to this day. In this initial installment, a freak tornado cyclone sends seawater (and a lot of the sharks in said seawater) in a little coastal town.

8. Twister (1996)

If any weather-based film shows the awe-inspiring power of a tornado, the popular 1996 movie "Twister" is it. This special effects-heavy movie follows a group of fictional storm chasers as they attempt to get data on the biggest twister of their lives. Not only was Twister the second-highest-grossing movie of 1996, but it was also nominated for multiple Academy Awards in the same year.

7. Earthquake (1974)

One of the most horrific natural occurrences is an earthquake. While it is common in many parts of the world for minor earthquakes to occur, being able to detect when the next big one is coming is a matter of life and death. The classic disaster movie "Earthquake" shook the film world up in 1974. With an all-star cast struggling to survive after a deadly earthquake in Los Angeles, Earthquake has gone on to be an inspiration for future generations.

6. Key Largo (1948)

While many of the top weather-related flicks involve harrowing stories of survival and danger, some of the best weather-inspired movies simply use Mother Nature as a backdrop to a great story. In 1948, "Key Largo" was released starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. A powerful hurricane is heading directly for a lavish Key Largo resort as a series of mysterious deaths rocks the guests and staff.

5. The Mist (2007)

Another movie where a freak weather occurrence is used as the backdrop for a dramatic story that unfolds inside a local grocery store. Stephen King's "The Mist" was released in 2007 and was based on a novella by the same name. As thick fog rolls in over a small and normally quiet town, many of the residents become trapped inside the local grocery store where human nature and fear take the reins.

4. The Perfect Storm (2000)

Based on a true story, "The Perfect Storm" is a blockbuster film starring megastars George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg as two fishermen fighting against the terrible force of a perfect storm. In 1991, what has become known as the Halloween Gale/Storm evolved into one of the most well-known hurricanes to hit the Atlantic coast.

3. Frozen (2013)

Known for the hit song 'Let It Go,' Disney's "Frozen" went on to be one of the most beloved animated movies of all-time. Cursed with the power to create and control cold and ice, Elsa causes a freeze to befall her entire kingdom. It is up to her sister Anna to save the day in this warm-hearted family adventure.

2. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The oldest and most well-known film on our top 10 list, "The Wizard of Oz" is the one movie that needs no introduction. The story of a young girl who is whisked away to a magical land via a massive tornado is highly regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.

1. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

You don't have to look far to see the real-world effects of climate change on our planet. In 2004, one film showed the extremes of what could happen if we're not careful. "The Day After Tomorrow" shows the world after a series of catastrophic weather events send earth into a new Ice Age.
