Blustery rain returns to northwestern Europe to kick off the week

Updated Mar. 9, 2020 8:03 AM

The next storm will be closing in on the United Kingdom early this week, after the storm track shifted north and stormy conditions returned to northern Europe late last week.
Rain will begin to arrive in western parts of Ireland and Northern Ireland by the afternoon before overspreading the rest of the British Isles Monday night.
On Tuesday, rain is expected to continue at times in parts of Northern Ireland, Wales, northern England and western Scotland. Elsewhere, most showers will taper off throughout the day as the storm advances into central Europe.
With flood alerts and warnings still in effect across the United Kingdom, any amount of rain can aggravate flooding, especially where rivers are still high. It was the wettest February in recorded history after some locations reported almost double the amount of normal rainfall for the month.
Rain will spread into central Europe by Tuesday morning. Most areas from northern France to western Poland can expect a couple of showers passing through the area. Steadier rain is expected in Belgium, Netherlands, northern Germany, Denmark and into southern Scandinavia.
Although, steadier rain could spread farther south across eastern France and western Germany, but this will depend on how fast the storm moves through area.
Most locations across northwestern Europe can expect rainfall totals under 13 mm (0.5 of an inch). However, where the steadiest rain falls, totals can climb closer to 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) by Tuesday.

Gusty winds out of the west to northwest around 30-40 mph (48-64 km/h) will accompany the storm as it races through the area. Along western-facing coasts and in high elevations, gusts can reach as high as 50 mph (80 km/h).
Snow is expected to fall in the higher elevations across the region as the storm brings cooler air into the region.
A messy pattern is forecast to continue through at least the rest of the week with multiple quick-hitting storms expected. While this will bring outbreaks of blustery showers to the United Kingdom and north central Europe, none of the storms are expected to bring widespread impacts.
