Seattle Had Its First Sunny Day in 80 Days and Residents Were Thrilled

Jonathan BellesPublished: February 19, 2020

There was a mysterious yellow orb hovering above the Seattle skyline earlier this week.
The National Weather Service said it last appeared 80 days ago, or way back in the 2010s, according to some.
Indeed, the sun shined to full effect in Rain City USA for the first time since November on Tuesday, and it kept shining on Wednesday.

Tuesday wasn't the first time that the sun had poked holes in the clouds, but it was the first time the sky was almost completely cloud-free.
People took advantage of the blue skies while they lasted.
According to KOMO-TV meteorologist Scott Sistek, January 2020 and December 2019 were the cloudiest months in the last five years.
And it wasn't just clouds blocking out the sun. Rain fell on 30 of the 31 days in January, and 12 of the first 15 days in February.
This has led to a 7.6-inch rainfall surplus since the beginning of December, which ranks as the fourth-wettest winter to date in records dating back to 1948.
All of the gloomy weather is directly due to a stuck weather pattern that has funneled storm after storm into the Pacific Northwest.
A modest nudge northward in the jet stream has kept Washington and Oregon wet, while California has been very dry.
Precipitation (rain and snow) since the beginning of meteorological winter on Dec. 1.
The rainy season usually begins in October and ends in March and makes up 75% of Seattle's annual precipitation.
Seattle has already picked up 70% of its annual precipitation since October, and there is another month remaining in the rainy season. And to think this rainy season began with a dry streak.
