Wet, windy weather to dampen Boxing Day celebrations throughout UK

Updated Dec. 25, 2019 7:25 AM

A busy week of holiday travel and activities across the United Kingdom will be affected by stormy weather. Widespread reports of flooding across the country are likely to continue this week.
More than 200 flood alerts and warnings remained in place across England on Monday following weekend downpours.
Despite a brief break from the wet weather on Christmas Day across the U.K., ongoing flooding still resulted in some localized travel disruptions.
A potent storm is set to arrive for Boxing Day, bringing both wind and more rain to most of the country. Spells of rain are possible throughout the holiday in Northern Ireland, western Wales and Southwest England.
A dry start to the day will quickly transition to wet and windy across the remainder of Wales and England. In Scotland, a few showers may dampen regions from the late morning into the afternoon.

Frequent wind gusts of 20-30 mph (32-48 km/h) are possible across the country with a few wind gusts near 40 mph (65 km/h) in exposed coastal and high-elevation locations. This combination of rain and wind will likely cause travel disruptions for people traveling to or from holiday destinations.
Additional rain and gusty winds are possible in Northern Ireland and Scotland from Friday into the weekend, while a spell of more tranquil weather may settle over Wales and England.
