The first in a series of storms has already battered Portugal and Spain this week and more heavy rainfall is expected.
The Lisbon and Porto regions were inundated by more than 100 mm (4 inches) of rainfall from Sunday through midday Monday and may receive another 100 mm (4 inches) or more of rain from late Wednesday into Friday.
A prolonged period of moderate to heavy rainfall will overspread the Iberian Peninsula from Wednesday afternoon into Friday with some additional rainfall possible this weekend.
Heavy rainfall will be centered from northern Portugal into northwest Spain on Wednesday afternoon.
These downpours will advance south and east Wednesday night, drenching the remainder of Portugal and much of the interior of Spain.
All of Portugal and Spain will be at risk for rainfall on Thursday with the heaviest expected across Portugal during the afternoon hours.

This surge of heavy rainfall will track eastward across Spain Thursday night, bringing an elevated risk for flash flooding and travel disruptions.
A final round of downpours will race across Portugal and Spain from Friday afternoon into Friday night.
Total rainfall of 25-75 mm (1-3 inches) will be common across Portugal and western and central parts of Spain with lesser amounts near Spain's eastern coastline.
The hardest hit locations across western Spain and Portugal will be at risk for 75-150 mm (3-6 inches) of rainfall with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 200 mm (8 inches).
These areas may endure severe flash flooding and widespread travel disruptions. In areas of rugged terrain, there will be a high risk for mudslides.
Southeast France and northern Italy will be affected by a period of heavy rainfall late Thursday night into Friday night which may produce flooding.
These areas have already endured multiple rounds of severe flooding in recent months.
