Widespread rainfall will dampen northern and eastern India this week, bringing improved air quality but also increasing the risk for localized flooding.
Rainfall will stretch from New Delhi and Nagpur to Kolkata and Northeast India on Thursday and Friday.
The heaviest rainfall will drench locations from Nagpur to Kolkata where 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) is possible with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 100 mm (4 inches).
Localized flooding and travel disruptions are possible both Thursday and Friday before rainfall diminishes in many areas on Saturday.
Some additional showers are possible across eastern India on Saturday with downpours possible in southern Bangladesh and Northeast India.
Dry weather will return to much of northern and eastern India from Sunday into next week.
Aside from localized flooding, the rainfall will be largely beneficial as it supplies vital soil moisture ahead of the spring planting season.
This rainfall will also stir up the atmosphere and provide improved air quality for millions of people that have endured weeks of dirty air.
In New Delhi, any improvement in the air quality will be modest and pollution levels are expected to worsen this weekend.
Locations from Mumbai northward into northwest India will avoid any rainfall but also fail to receive any relief from the dangerous levels of air quality.
These areas will remain dry and continue to suffer through detrimental smog through the first week of January.
