Arctic Cold Blast Bringing Subzero Cold to Upper Midwest, December Reality Check to South, East

weather.com meteorologistsPublished: December 10, 2019

Colder air is making a return to the central and eastern United States this week as arctic air from Canada sweeps away a brief spell of milder temperatures.
The arctic cold front is now slicing through the Ohio Valley, Mid-South and southern Plains.
Temperatures plunged below zero Tuesday morning in parts of the Dakotas, Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, including the Twin Cities. Wind chills in the 20s and 30s below zero have been measured in some of those areas.

Forecast

Ahead of the arctic cold front, highs Tuesday will be well above average for the second week in December in the East, before temperatures start crashing Tuesday night.
Highs in the 50s are possible as far north as Vermont, and the Interstate 95 corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C., will flirt with low 60s. A few daily record highs for December 10 could be set. For example, Caribou, Maine, set a daily record high in the upper 40s after midnight Tuesday morning.
Forecast Highs Tuesday Compared to Average
After a high near 60 degrees Tuesday, New York City could struggle to reach freezing Thursday.
Highs in the 40s and 50s will be increasingly common in the South Tuesday and Wednesday.
The worst of the cold will affect the Northern Plains and upper Midwest. Highs may struggle to rise out of the single digits above and below zero at times through Wednesday from parts of the Dakotas into portions of Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
High temperatures in the teens may plunge as far south as the western Great Lakes, including Milwaukee, by Tuesday or Wednesday.
Forecast Highs
Low temperatures will drop below zero in portions of the Northern Plains and upper Midwest through Thursday.
Parts of North Dakota and northern Minnesota could bottom out in the teens or 20s below zero again Wednesday morning. It will feel even colder when the wind is factored in, and wind chills in the 30s below zero are possible in parts of the Northern Plains.
Lows in the teens are forecast as far south as the central Plains the southern Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. Morning lows in the 20s are forecast from Texas to parts of the Carolinas to the Northeast Seaboard.
Forecast Morning Lows
We aren't expecting many daily cold records to be set, even in the coldest air in the upper Midwest.
The colder air won't linger for too long. Forecast highs could rise near or above average in much of the Midwest by Friday.
However, another reinforcing cold plunge should affect some of the same parts of the Northern Plains and upper Midwest this weekend, sending temperatures plunging below zero once again in the Dakotas and Minnesota.
