Winterlike pattern to keep snow, cold in place across Midwest, Great Lakes

Updated Nov. 3, 2019 12:04 PM

A stormy pattern will bring bring shots of snow and cold across the northern tier of the United States this week.
A persistent dip in the jet stream will bring along multiple rounds of unsettled weather across the Midwest and Great Lakes.
Cold air and westerly winds over the Great Lakes have kicked off the lake-effect snow season already in some places.
With cold air still in place, this will mean more snow for some.
Another storm system tracking along the Canadian border late Sunday into Monday morning will bring more chances for wet weather.
Most places will see rain from this system, as precipitation stretches from the Dakotas to Michigan,
Places like Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Grand Rapids, Michigan, as well as Detroit can all expect rain rather than snow from this storm system on Monday.
However, some locations snow will enough snow, especially late Sunday night and early Monday morning that there may be a few slippery spots. This includes communities like Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Minneapolis; and Fargo, North Dakota.

The train of weak systems tracking into the region will continue into midweek. A more classic Alberta clipper system is set to track across the northern tier of the country during this time frame.
The fast-paced system will drop out of the Canadian Prairies and into the Dakotas by Tuesday, likely bringing along a band of snow for places like Bismarck, North Dakota, and Aberdeen, South Dakota.
By Wednesday, the storm system will continue its trek eastward into the Great Lakes.
Portions of Wisconsin and Michigan could have accumulating snowfall Wednesday as the system passes through.
Snowfall chances continue farther east on Thursday as the clipper system tracks into New England. Areas downwind of Lake Erie and Ontario as well as portions of the Adirondacks, White and Green Mountains could all see snowflakes fly.
Due to the relatively fast-paced nature of this system, snowfall accumulations will generally only be a few inches for most locations.
With cool air already in place across the Midwest, snow will be able to stick to the pavement quicker due to lower road temperatures. This could lead to localized slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Travelers on interstates 29, 35, 75, 90 and 94 may need to allow for some extra time due to the cold and snowy conditions midweek across the Midwest.
Although the weather is forecast to remain quite active across this region through midweek, snowfall totals will not amount to much due to the quick storm motion.
Unfortunately for those dreading the wintery weather across the Midwest and Great Lakes, the pattern looks to persist into next weekend as well.
Cold air, and temperatures more common in late November or December, will follow the stormy weather across the Northern Plains and Great Lakes
