Shots of cold aim for the Midwest as normal autumn chill holds over the Northeast into Halloween

Updated Oct. 20, 2019 5:04 AM

A progressive weather pattern will send several storms across the eastern half of the country, making for topsy-turvy temperatures in the Midwest.
Between Nestor along the East Coast and a budding storm in the northern Rockies, comfortable autumn temperatures will flood the Midwest and Northeast through the weekend.
High pressure holding between the two systems will also keep it dry for most in the Northeast into Monday, but the next storm will move into the Midwest.
Changeable weather can be expected across much of the Midwest and the Great Lakes in the coming days.
"The pattern will be pretty progressive, allowing several storms to track through the Great Lakes through the end of the month," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Eric Leister.
These storms will cause dips in the jet stream, allowing cooler air to pour into parts of the Midwest at times through the end of October.
After temperatures reach the lower to middle 60s across the region over the weekend, including in cities like Minneapolis and Chicago, temperatures will fall into the 40s by Tuesday.
Despite a brief warmup next weekend, temperatures will again drop for the last few days of October with highs only in the 30s, which is more characteristic of the latter half of November.
While some of the wet weather will make it into the Northeast as well, interrupting drier weather, temperatures will stay pretty consistent from Ohio on eastward.
While the cold is able to dive deep into the Midwest, most of the Northeast coast will be protected from having the same chilly afternoons.

"As is normal for late October, low temperatures in New England will drop down into the 30s, but highs will be mostly near normal into the end of the month," Leister added.
The coldest weather looks to arrive in time for Halloween across much of the Midwest and Northeast.
After temperatures reach the 60s for the next 10 days in cities like Philadelphia and Washington D.C., temperatures will fall into 50s in time for Halloween.
In New England, temperatures will drop into the lower 50s and, for some, maybe only the upper 40s in the afternoon.

"Temperatures could be running 5-10 degrees below normal for the final days in October. Confidence is growing that it could be a cold Halloween for many," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.
Evening temperatures on Halloween will range greatly across the region. Temperatures could hover in middle 30s in Minneapolis while falling to near 40 for many in the Great Lakes like Chicago and Detroit.
Should the cold reach even farther east, evening temperatures could be in the middle to upper 40s from Boston to Philadelphia.
With cold air holding over the region right at the end of the month, trick-or-treaters will want to bundle up wearing layers and jackets, perhaps modifying costumes.
With the progressive pattern, it is possible some areas could also be dealing with some rain in addition to the cold air for Halloween.
