Warm, cool air to battle over northeastern US into the weekend

By Maura Kelly, AccuWeather meteorologist

The northeastern United States will be a battleground between chilly air from eastern Canada and warm air trying to push north from the southern U.S. through the end of the week.
Warmer air began to build northward across the Northeast on Tuesday as high pressure shifted eastward over the Atlantic. Temperatures peaked a few degrees Fahrenheit above normal over much of the region.
During the middle of September, highs typically range from the upper 60s in northern Maine to the middle 80s in southeastern Virginia.
Meanwhile, a storm system will be moving into the Great Lakes and will bring a little rain to far upstate New York and Vermont into Tuesday night.
On Wednesday, high temperatures ahead of the storm system will generally range from near 80 to the lower 90s across the region. It will feel even warmer with AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures in the low to upper 90s.

Temperatures over much of the central Appalachians, mid-Atlantic and southern New England will be 5-10 degrees above average on Wednesday.
“While most of the I-95 corridor will remain dry on Wednesday, interior sections of the Northeast will need to keep an eye out for pop-up afternoon thunderstorms, some of which could produce locally severe weather,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham.
Thunderstorms firing in the abundant moisture across southern New York and northern Pennsylvania may pack a punch with locally gusty winds and heavy rain late in the afternoon and into the early evening.
Warm and rain-free conditions will continue to win out across the mid-Atlantic during the day on Wednesday. However, a couple of showers and thunderstorms can sneak into the area Wednesday evening.
A cooler air mass from eastern Canada is expected to push into northern areas in the wake of the storm system.

“Many residents across New England will need a jacket in the morning as a cool northerly breeze will send temperatures into the 40s and 50s,” added Buckingham.
An area of showers and thunderstorms across Pennsylvania and New Jersey will be the dividing line between the cooler air to the north and warm and humid air still lingering across Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.
South of the Mason-Dixon Line, high temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s will remain common.
"The cooler, more stable air mass will continue to advance southward on Friday, however, as fall-like temperatures will spread across the I-95 corridor and the mid-Atlantic," stated Buckingham.
NE Fri 9.10 11am
The most dramatic change is expected in areas around Baltimore and Washington, D.C., where high temperatures climb into the lower 90s on Thursday. On Friday, highs will struggle to reach 80 F.
The joust between warm and cool air for position over the Northeast will continue through this weekend and the winner will depend on the storm system moving through the northern Plains during the middle of the week.
Saturday NE
The storm looks to move across the region throughout the weekend and drag a cold front through the mid-Atlantic. This will open the door for another round of cool air, keeping fall-like temperatures over the Northeast.
However, if the front gets hung up north of the mid-Atlantic states, cooler air may struggle to make it into the Northeast.
