Northeast may be in for extended period of sunny weather this week

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

With Humberto being steered out to sea and a bit of an atmospheric traffic jam developing, the northeastern United States may soon benefit from an extended period of dry, sunny weather.
A couple of weak storm systems will move through the region into Monday.
The first of these caused trouble at some area football games on Saturday due to the risk of lightning strikes.
Beaver Stadium at the Pennsylvania State University had to be cleared when storms approached during the midday hours on Saturday.
That same storm system will settle along the mid-Atlantic and New England coast on Sunday.
A second storm system will move through the region on Monday with spotty showers and a stray thunderstorm.
However, the stretch from Tuesday through Thursday, and perhaps longer, has the potential to be generally sunny across the region.
The same pattern may confine hot and humid conditions to the South Central states next week.
Highs are generally forecast to be within a few degrees of average most days for this week with perhaps a warmer-than-average finish at the end of the week.
RELATED:
This time of the year, highs generally range from the upper 60s over northern Maine to near 80 in southeastern Virginia.
Volume 0%

Severe thunderstorms broke out over parts of Ohio on Friday, Sept. 13. The severe weather has left thousands without power in several counties, and as you can see by this video, despite the severity of the storm, the lightning certainly dazzled in the sky.
Other than the spotty shower risk into Monday, the only other potential travel problem may be from patchy early-morning fog. The greatest risk of travel-snarling fog will be over the interior river valleys through part of the morning rush hour.
