Barcelona to Murcia on alert for flooding, mudslides this week

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

A slow-moving storm system will bring days of downpours to parts of eastern Spain this week.
The storm will arrive on Tuesday, unleashing heavy rain and thunderstorms from northeast Spain into southern France and the Balearic Islands.
Downpours can unleash 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) of rainfall in a short time period causing flash flooding and heightened risk for mudslides.

Locations at the greatest risk for these impacts on Tuesday and Tuesday night include Marseille and Montpellier in France and Barcelona, Tarragona and Palma in Spain.
As the storm drifts southward and stalls on Wednesday, thunderstorms and downpours will be possible from Barcelona to Murcia and across the Balearic Islands.
Aside from the continued risk for flash flooding and mudslides, these thunderstorms will also be capable producing hail.
On Thursday, the heaviest rainfall will shift southward giving some reprieve to Palma and Barcelona; however, downpours will continue to target Valencia to Murcia.
