Thunderstorms will bring flood risk, travel delays into Thursday in UK

Following weekend downpours that caused flooding in parts of the United Kingdom, a slow-moving storm system will bring the risk for daily showers and thunderstorms across much of the country in the coming days.

The greatest threat on Tuesday will be across Wales, the Midlands and southern England, where much of the day will have periods of rain and thunderstorms.

Locations from Plymouth and Cardiff to Manchester, Oxford and Leicester will be most at risk for flooding downpours.

These downpours will also bring the risk for flight delays and impacts to rail and bus services. The strongest thunderstorms can also produce frequent lightning, locally damaging winds and small hail.

While greater London is expected to dodge the heaviest rainfall, a couple of showers and a thunderstorm will still be possible during the middle and afternoon hours.

Along with the risk for rainfall, strong winds will blow across southern England with frequent gusts of 20-30 mph (32-48 km/h). Blustery conditions are forecast farther north across Wales, the Midlands and northern England.

As the storm system slowly moves northeast, the threat for heavy thunderstorms will set up from Edinburgh to Manchester and London on Wednesday.

Once again the primary threat will be for flash flooding along with travel disruptions. Both the morning and evening commutes may be impacted by heavy rainfall that results in water on roadways or even road closures in some locations.

Improved weather is expected from Cardiff to Plymouth with a few showers possible throughout the day.

A third day of showers and thunderstorms will dampen much of the U.K. on Thursday. Locations across eastern Wales, England and Scotland will all be at risk for adverse weather with changeable skies.

Sunny skies can quickly be replaced by dark storm clouds and the risk for downpours and lightning.

Drier weather is expected throughout the U.K. on Friday and Saturday; however, local showers and even a brief downpours will be possible each day.
