New tropical depression will bring downpours, gusty winds and floods to Japan later this week

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

A tropical depression formed in the West Pacific Ocean south of Japan on Wednesday which will approach the country later this week.
The newly formed tropical depression is forecast to track northward into Saturday as it slowly approaches the coastline of Honshu.
Some strengthening is expected over the next 48 hours allowing this new tropical threat to become a tropical storm. Upon reaching tropical storm status, the name Nari would be given to the tropical cyclone.

Impacts from the budding tropical storm will be limited to offshore areas through Friday. Anyone taking part in marine activities should be prepared for rough seas, gusty winds and occasional downpours.
Surf will build along the eastern coast of Kyushu, southern coast of Shikoku and the eastern coast on Honshu into the day on Saturday.
Rain and gusty winds associated with the storm will reach the coast of Honshu Friday night into Saturday morning affecting areas from Mie to Chiba. Downpours will become more widespread and expand inland across central Honshu on Saturday and Saturday night.

The storm will then turn sharply to the northeast, taking it near or just off the coast of Honshu into the day on Sunday.
During this time, downpours will continue to be scattered across central Honshu, and strong winds will affect coastal locations.
"There can be minor tree damage and sporadic power outages in areas that have wind gusts to or over 80 km/h (50 mph)," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Houk said.
Rainfall amounts of 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) are possible across east-central Honshu, including the Greater Tokyo Area. The heaviest rainfall in the Tokyo area is expected from Saturday into Sunday when some travel disruptions are anticipated. This rainfall will be also be capable of producing flash flooding and will heighten the risk for mudslides in areas of rugged terrain.
The weather will quickly improve across Japan by the start of next week as the tropical system tracks quickly northeastward into the open Pacific Ocean.
