Heat to fuel severe thunderstorms from France to Romania this weekend

By Kristina Pydynowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Relief from the heat building back into central Europe is on the horizon but will come at the expense of potentially damaging thunderstorms this weekend.
The surge of heat and humidity will help fuel severe thunderstorms along the corridor from central and southern France to southern Austria and Slovenia on Saturday and then from southern Hungary and Croatia to Romania on Sunday.
A separate area of strong thunderstorms will threaten a few communities in eastern Spain both days this weekend.
While not to the extreme levels as what was recorded in late June, the heat will still send temperatures soaring into the lower 30s C (upper 80s and lower 90s F) in many areas of central Europe this weekend. The hottest locations in southeastern France will endure highs of 35-37 C (middle to upper 90s F).

While residents and motorists will have to remain alert for lightning and downpour dangers during the morning, most of the strongest thunderstorms will erupt during the afternoon and evening hours.
"The severe thunderstorms during the first half of the weekend will be widely separated, but any will have the ability to produce flash flooding, hail and damaging winds," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.
Anyone participating in festivities ahead of Sunday's Women's World Cup Final in Lyon, France, will have to remain alert to changing weather conditions and be ready to seek shelter.
Even if a thunderstorm does not produce damage, the risk of being struck by lightning is present as soon as thunder is heard.
Other cities in the path of the violent thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon and evening include Tours and Limoges, France; Zürich, Switzerland; Milan and Venice, Italy; and Graz, Austria.
"Saturday's threat of severe weather will extend well into the evening, especially in extreme southwestern Germany," Roys stated.
"When compared to Saturday, there can be more numerous severe thunderstorms on Sunday as the threat continues in northeastern Italy and expands to the northern Balkan Peninsula," he added.
Once again, damaging winds, hail and flooding downpours will pose dangers to those in the path of the violent thunderstorms.
Sunday's threat zone includes Udine, Italy; Zagreb, Croatia; Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina; Belgrade, Serbia; and Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Latest indications keep the severe thunderstorms north of Bucharest.

"The thunderstorms this weekend will knock down temperatures for early next week," Roys stated.
Showers and thunderstorms will focus on more of southern Europe, as well as eastern Ukraine on Monday.
"While the risk will not be as high as on Sunday, a few thunderstorms can still turn severe on Monday," according to Roys.
Another round of severe weather may unfold from southern France to northern Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday.
