Heat to build for 2019 Epsom Derby as dry weather prevails

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

The 2019 Epsom Derby festival is set to take place on Friday and Saturday, and a big change in the weather is on the way.
The Epsom Derby is the richest race in Britain and the most prestigious of the English Classics, according to Racing Post.
The race, which is set to take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, has a long history dating back to 1780.

Other races will take place both Friday and Saturday between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
After cool and damp weather spreads across the area on Wednesday, temperatures will trend upwards later this week, setting the stage for two warm days of racing.
Several days of dry weather leading up to the race will harden the racing surface, eliminating the risk for any muddy conditions.

The action gets underway on Friday with Ladies' Day. Racing will start at 2 p.m., with gates opening at 11 a.m.
Dry weather is expected, with morning clouds yielding to some afternoon sunshine.
Temperatures will climb from 18 C (66 F) when the gates open to an afternoon high of 21 C (71 F).
The warmth will continue to build on Saturday for Derby Day as temperatures soar to 25 C (77 F) by the early afternoon hours.
More sunshine is expected on Saturday along with continued dry weather.
Spectators should be sure to drink plenty of water in order to remain hydrated both Friday and Saturday. Light-colored clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen are also suggested for those attending the events.
