Storm to spread rain, ice and snow into eastern US to end this week

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

A storm poised to bring localized flooding to the central Plains and severe thunderstorms farther south at midweek will spread a swath of rain with some ice and snow into the northeastern United States by Friday, April 5.
The storm is forecast to lose some strength as it pushes quickly eastward. With this in mind, a major severe thunderstorm outbreak seems unlikely in the Southeast, as does flooding rain in the Northeast.
The storm will cause some travel problems from Thursday night to Friday in the form of slippery road conditions due to rain, and the potential for wet snow and even some ice.
"The greatest concern we have for motorists and pedestrians will be where snow and rain occur late at night into the first part of the morning," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brian Wimer.
Thursday Night Snap NE

The sun will warm paved surfaces during the day Thursday. However, a clear sky for a time Thursday night may allow the air and road surface temperature to drop enough for some problems for the Friday morning commute.
"In this case, we do not expect heavy precipitation, but where and when it rains or snows and the roads and sidewalks have had a chance to cool off at night, there can be slippery conditions," Wimer said.
Friday Northeast Snap

"We believe there can be slippery spots at the onset of the precipitation from part of the northern tier of Pennsylvania to portions of western, central and northern New York state spanning late Thursday night to the mid-morning hours on Friday," Wimer said.
Freezing rain and snow accumulation on roads during April is rare. However, the fact that it snowed and accumulated on the roads during the middle of the day much farther south in the Carolinas on Tuesday, April 2, demonstrates that it can happen.
In portions of northern New York state and New England, especially over the mountains, there can be a few inches of snow, mainly on non-paved surfaces from the storm as it moves along later Friday to Friday night.
As is the case farther to the southwest in New York state and Pennsylvania, some bridges, overpasses and areas that do not receive direct sunlight could be slippery over the northern tier of the region.
No trouble from ice or snow is expected for major cities in the Midwest and Northeast such as Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. However, rain and wet roads may cause some minor issues and disrupt some outdoor plans.
The fast forward motion of this storm should be enough to salvage at least part of the weekend with at least partial sunshine and moderating temperatures in most locations.
US Late Week

However, the same fast motion of weather systems may cause clouds to increase and rain showers to overspread part of the region late Sunday.
Weekend US

The storm late Sunday to Monday is not expected to bring any substantial snow or ice to the region and may be an indicator of another step into spring weather conditions.
