42,000-year-old specimen believed to be 'best preserved Ice Age animal ever found in the world'

By Michael Kuhne, AccuWeather staff writer

Siberia’s Verkhoyansk region boasts one of the most extreme continental climates on Earth allowing for the preservation of extinct animals buried deep in permafrost.
In 2018, mammoth tusk hunters unearthed the 42,000-year-old carcass of a foal from the Batagaika crater during the summer months, according to CNN.
Russian researchers from North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk were able extract bodily fluids, including blood and urine, from the frozen carcass after an autopsy was conducted, according to the report. They estimate the foal was about one to two weeks oldat the time of its death 42,000 years ago.
The region’s unique geographic location makes it prone to vast temperature extremes, AccuWeather Meteorologist Jim Andrews explained. The site of the discovery is roughly 40 miles from Verkhoyansk, which has an average January temperature of minus 55 degrees Fahrenheit, Andrews said. “It is an area of extreme cold,” he added.
Average highs and lows in January are between minus 50 for the high and minus 60 for the lows, he said, citing clear skies, very little sunlight and large open lands that contribute to the region’s frigid winter temperatures.
The summer months in the region bring significant changes with an average temperature of 55 degrees F in July, Andrews said.
However, during the summer of 2018 when the foal was unearthed, extreme heat was recorded in the area. Daytime highs soared in the region to 93 degrees Fahrenheit for nearly a week, Andrews said.
The discovery of liquid blood and urine and the preservation of the animal’s fur make it an even more rare find, according to CNN.
Semyon Grigoriev, director of the Mammoth Museum at North-Eastern Federal University, told CNN the animal likely drowned at two weeks old before becoming buried in the mud and preserved for thousands of years in a permafrost tomb.
"An autopsy showed the foal carcass was extremely well-preserved," he told CNN. "The hair cover also preserved most parts of the carcass, especially at the head and legs."
Internal organs and muscle tissue were intact, since the foal was so well preserved in the permafrost.
According to the Siberian Times, Grigoriev said, "‘We can now claim that this is the best preserved Ice Age animal ever found in the world."
As with other animal carcasses discovered in the region’s permafrost, scientists are hopeful they will be able to clone extinct animals like the woolly mammoth within a short time. Lab-grown woolly mammoths may only be a few years away, according to a 2017 report. Indeed, the scientists that found the 42,000-year-old sample are actively investigating whether they'll be able to clone this long extinct ancient animal using the DNA they've obtained, the university said in a news release.

Hundreds of flights canceled in Chicago as snow to streak from Minnesota to Michigan into Saturday night

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

A late-April storm will put down accumulating snow along a 1,200-mile swath of the north-central United States this weekend with slippery travel possible in cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit.
Old Man Winter still has a few tricks up his sleeve and will continue to cause rain to change to snow along a narrow swath from southern Minnesota, northern Iowa, southern Wisconsin, far northern Illinois and southern Michigan as the weekend progresses.
Madison, Wisconsin; Rochester, Minnesota; Dubuque, Iowa, as well as Chicago and Detroit are in the path of the snow.
The impending snow in Chicago has led to more than 400 flights being canceled at the city's O'Hare International and Midway International airports on Saturday, according to FlightAware.
The baseball game scheduled for today between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers was postponed due to inclement weather.

It is not uncommon for this portion of the northern tier of the U.S. to receive snow during late April.
In order for snow to accumulate in late April outside of high-elevation areas, it must come down at a fast pace.
Typically snow of this nature falls in a narrow swath as this storm is expected to produce.
In a narrow swath within this zone, an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 10 inches of snow can fall, mainly on non-paved surfaces. Snowfall of 1-6 inches will be more common in this narrow zone.
New snow map April 27

In this setup, a north-south distance of 25 miles may mean the difference between a small slushy accumulation on the grass and 6 inches of snow with slippery roads.
The snow swath will overlap portions the Interstate 90 and 94 corridors.
Accumulating snow began across the Black Hills of South Dakota on Friday night before spreading eastward and whitening Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with 1.5 inches on Saturday morning.

Milwaukee is forecast to pick up several inches of wet snow from the storm during Saturday evening.
It is during the late afternoon and at night when Chicago can receive snow and experience a period of slippery travel.
Gusty winds can whip the snow and dramatically reduce visibility for motorists. There can also be a few rumbles of thunder amid the snow during the height of the storm.

The snow event would primarily be from Saturday night to Sunday morning in Michigan.
Meanwhile, Detroit is forecast to pick up a coating to an inch or two of snow during Saturday night as well.
The potential for snow may not be limited to the North Central states.
There is the potential for not only wet snow, but perhaps a couple of inches of the white stuff over parts of northern Pennsylvania, New York state and some mountains in New England from Saturday night to Sunday evening.
South of the swath of snow, showers and thunderstorms are in store from the middle Mississippi Valley to northern Texas. Some of the storms can be quite heavy and gusty during the afternoon and evening hours with localized severe weather possible.

Heightened flood risk to target south-central US next week

By Renee Duff, AccuWeather meteorologist

Repeating downpours will put the south-central United States at risk for flash flooding and travel disruptions as April ends and May begins.
Heavy to locally severe thunderstorms will first rumble through parts of the region this weekend before the heightened flood threat arises next Tuesday through Wednesday.
Sat severe April 27

AccuWeather meteorologists are honing in on a corridor from south-central Texas to eastern Kansas, Missouri and western Illinois to be at greatest risk of heavy rainfall that can put some communities underwater.
Ample moisture surging northward from the Gulf of Mexico will link up with a slow-moving storm system to produce rounds of downpours.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms will repeat and could remain relatively stationary over areas that have recently received excessive amounts of rainfall, according to AccuWeather Storm Warning Meteorologist Brian Koochel.
Month-to-date, Austin, Dallas and Tyler, Texas, have received 2-3.5 times their normal rainfall for all of April. Many rivers in eastern Texas remain above flood stage as a result.
"This additional round of persistent, heavy rain will quickly raise concerns for flooding," Koochel said.
Flood risk April 27

Rainfall totals could approach or exceed 4 inches with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 8 inches in part of the region. This could include the Interstate-35 corridor from San Antonio to the Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex.
Other cities at risk for heavy rainfall totals and flooding include Abilene and San Angelo, Texas; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma; Fort Smith, Arkansas; and Kansas City, Springfield and St. Louis, Missouri.
Poor driving conditions that will include reduced visibility and a heightened risk of hydroplaning while traveling at highway speeds will threaten sections of interstates 20, 30, 35, 40, 44 and 70.
Road closures will be possible due to high water.
Motorists are urged to turn around and find a safer alternate route if floodwaters are encountered.
Even in the absence of flooding, the downpours will cause disruptions for those with outdoor plans.
Koochel is concerned that in addition to the dangers of flooding, severe thunderstorms can also inflict damage in some communities.
The severe weather risk is likely to be greatest over Oklahoma and Texas with damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes all possibilities.

Florida man contracts flesh-eating bacteria while fishing in Gulf of Mexico

By Adriana Navarro, AccuWeather staff writer

A Florida man out fishing off the coast of Palm Harbor in the Gulf of Mexico contracted an infection with flesh-eating bacteria last Saturday.
WFTS reported Ozona, Florida, native Mike Walton is being treated for flesh-eating disease known as necrotizing fasciitis.
Walton was stuck by a fish hook on Saturday. By the next day, his hand had grown swollen and black blisters had grown. He was rushed to the burn unit once at the Tampa General Hospital. Luckily, they were able to save his life and his arm, which risked amputation.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that more than one type of bacteria can cause necrotizing fasciitis. According to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology, that includes Vibrio vulnificus. This bacteria thrives in warm, brackish water and can cause infection through entering wounds or through the consumption of oysters.
Last year, the Florida Department of Health reported 42 Vibrio vulnificus cases and nine deaths.

According to the CDC, 1 in 3 people with necrotizing fasciitis die from the infection.
Risk of a Vibrio vulnificus infection is highest between May and October when the ocean, lake and river waters are warmer according to the CDC. These months coincide with hurricane season for the United States, emphasizing the importance to keep any wounds clean and out of warm waters.
People usually contract an infection through wading into warm waters with an open wound or eating infected shellfish. However, necrotizing fasciitis does not always accompany a Vibrio vulnificus infection.

There have been at least 389 confirmed cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections from 2008 to 2018 and at least 99 deaths in Florida according to the Florida Department of Health.
The CDC estimates that the bacteria causes about 205 infections in the United States every year, and about one in seven people with a Vibrio vulnificus wound infection dies.
According to the CDC, the health threat "predominantly affects people with a compromised immune system or an underlying illness, especially liver disease."
Symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis can include but aren't limited to a quickly swelling are of skin, severe pain, fever and black spots on the skin.
