By Katy Galimberti, AccuWeather staff writer

A massive winter storm pummeled the midwestern and eastern United States this week, causing chaos as the storm trekked across the regions.
The snow fell in quick bursts at times, making for dangerous road conditions, especially for unsuspecting drivers.
Two people died in a car crash during the storm in Pemberton, New Jersey, about 30 miles east of Philadelphia, according to the Associated Press. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
A fatal accident was also reported in Kansas on Wednesday, the AP reported. A 67-year-old woman died when she reportedly lost control of her vehicle in snowy and icy conditions.

In another chance weather incident, riders were suspended in the air after a ride malfunctioned at SeaWorld San Diego.

The riders had to be lowered down by harness into lifeboats in a rescue effort that took more than an hour.

An avalanche killed at least one and injured several others this week at a popular ski resort in Switzerland.
The event caught skiers off guard on Tuesday in Crans-Montana, as it occurred on a frequently used slope in an area that was deemed low for avalanche risk, according to the BBC.
Hundreds of people joined search-and-rescue efforts that lasted into early Wednesday morning before being called off after no additional people were reported missing.
Local authorities continued to investigate the cause of avalanche, with possibilities ranging from weather conditions to skier behavior.
