10 of the best pop-up Christmas markets in the US

A number of present-day Christmas traditions have been adopted from long-time German traditions.
Over the past couple of decades, areas of the United States have recreated the ever-popular German Christkindl market among other European-themed markets. These old-time holiday season customs include everything from popular European food and drink, traditional arts and crafts and live entertainment.
1. Union Square Holiday Market
When: Dec. 1 – Dec. 24, 2017; Monday through Friday: 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST, Saturday: 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST, Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. EST
Where: Union Square Park, Southern Side, New York City
What: A warming station, kids craft studio, live music, shop and food vendors. Visitors can shop for artwork, home goods, winter accessories and gifts for kids. A number of stands will display “Artisan Pledge” symbols to show whether they are shopping “socially-consciously.” These goods may be 100 percent handmade, made in New York, made from recycled, reused or vintage items, from local stores or farms and more.

2. The Great Dickens Christmas Fair
Where: Cow Palace Exhibition Halls – Daly City, California
When: Dec. 2, Dec. 3, Dec. 9, Dec. 10, Dec. 16, Dec. 17, 2017; 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. PST
What: In comparison to the many German-themed holiday markets, the Great Dickens Christmas Fair is based on historic London and Charles Dickens’ timeless novel, A Christmas Carol. The fair features music halls, theatres, pubs and, of course, a number of shops with handmade gifts and more.
"Most assuredly, the very best thing about the Great Dickens Christmas Fair is the irrepressible holiday spirit of its 800 costumed characters. They truly sweep you into the mood for dancing, cheering, feasting, and shopping for treasures,” said Kevin Patterson, executive director of The Great Dickens Christmas Fair/Red Barn Productions. 3. Downtown Holiday Market
When: Dec. 1 – Dec. 23; daily from noon to 8 p.m. EST
Where: Centered at 8th and F Streets, Northwest in downtown Washington, D.C.
What: Located just outside the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian, the Downtown Holiday Market features various selections of exhibits and artisans offering art, crafts, accessories and specialty food items. The "village" will also include live entertainment and a variety of snacks and beverages.

4. Cincideutsch Christkindlmarkt
Where: Fountain Square - Cincinnati, Ohio
When: Dec. 1-3, Dec. 8, and Dec. 9, 2017 at various times EST
What: Cincideutsch Christkindlmarkt is a traditional weekend German Christmas market. The market is held in Fountain Square during Macy’s Light Up the Square event with the lighting of the tree. Vendors include local artisans, traditional German food, the German hot spiced wine “Glühwein.”

5. Christmas Village
Where: West Shore Park in the Inner Harbor - Baltimore, Maryland
When: Dec. 1 – Dec. 24, 2017; Sunday to Thursday: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. EST; Friday - Saturday: 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. EST; it will be closed Nov. 28, Dec. 5 and Dec. 12
What: Baltimore’s Christmas Village is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Like many Christmas markets, Christmas Village is modeled after traditional German Christkindl markets. The village features more than 50 booths selling everything from traditional European foods, gifts, ornaments, accessories and art.
"There's nothing like taking in the twinkling lights and sounds of the season, with the view of the water, while you sip and shop. Gluhwein lovers also can enjoy new Ho Ho Happy Hour this year with drink discounts, plus partake in wine tastings on Mondays and Wednesdays," said Anna Hohlfeld, PR and social media manager of Christmas Village in Baltimore.

6. Christkindlmarket
Where: Naperville, Illinois; Chicago Loop, Chicago; The Park at Wrigley
When: Naperville: Dec. 1 – Dec 24, 2017; Thursday – Sunday; Thursdays from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. CST; Friday and Saturday: 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. CST; Sunday: 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. CST
What: Chicago’s own Christkindl Market can be found at three different areas around Chicago: Naperville, Downtown Chicago and the Park at Wrigley Field. Vendors include traditional German food and drink, unique shopping and holiday entertainment at each location. Certain days at the Park at Wrigley features different entertainment or activities for those in attendance.

7. Georgetown Christmas Market
Where: The entire small town of Georgetown, Colorado
When: Dec. 2, Dec. 3, Dec. 9, Dec. 10, 2017 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. MST
What: The town of Georgetown transforms into an old-timey Christmas town where Christmas hasn't changed in 100 years.” The town-wide event features roasted chestnuts, horse drawn wagon rides, holiday shopping and the occasional appearance by good old St. Nick and carolers in traditional Victorian dress.

8. Old World Christmas Market
Where: Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin
When: Dec. 1 – Dec. 10, 2017 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. CST
What: The event is held inside a heated tent and features delicacies and crafts from international and regional vendors, varying from Czech blown-glass ornaments to Estonian woolens. There is an entire section of the fair dedicated to traditional European eats and the chance to see Father Christmas roaming throughout the fair. Admission to the event is $6 per adult.

9. Enchant Christmas
Where: Globe Life Park, Lot F – Arlington, Texas
When: Dec. 1 – Dec. 31, 2017, excluding Dec. 24 from 5 p.m. – 11 p.m. CST
What: Formerly the Texas Christkindl Market, for the first time this year Enchant Christmas seeks to make the Lone Star State “a lot brighter” according to their website. Unlike other markets, Enchant Christmas features a light maze, an ice skating pond, Santa’s palace, a Christmas market with a section dedicated to a German Christkindl theme and live music. Enchant Christmas is a ticket-only event and there are limited number of tickets for each night. Tickets can be found on their website.

10. Christkindlmarkt, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Where: PNC Plaza at SteelStacks – Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
When: Thursday – Sunday, Dec. 1 – Dec. 23, 2017; Thursday and Sunday: 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. EST; Friday and Saturday: 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. EST
What: Nicknamed the “Christmas City,” Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has been transforming into a holiday wonderland for 25 years. Christkindlmarkt features more than 150 vendors from the countries best artisans, live Christmas music, ice carving and glass blowing demonstrations and more. Both daily admission tickets and season passes are available on their website.
