Photographer captures breathtaking images of rare and elusive weather phenomenon

A rare and elusive weather phenomenon was photographed last weekend in the central United States as severe thunderstorms swept across the region.
When lightning occurs, it usually either dances through the clouds of a thunderstorm or strikes the ground, but when conditions are right, a certain type of lightning bolt can extend well above the thunderstorm itself. This type of lightning is known as a "sprite."
The red color of the sprites is believed to be caused by the interaction between the sprites and nitrogen in the atmosphere, according to the University of Washington. This is why they are also known as "red sprites."
"Red sprites are short-lived, red flashes that occur about 80 kilometers (50 miles) up in the atmosphere. With long, vertical tendrils like a jellyfish, these electrical discharges can extend 20 to 30 kilometers up into the atmosphere and are connected to thunderstorms and lightning,” NASA reported.
To put their size into perspective, most commercial jets fly at a cruising altitude of around 7 or 8 miles, just a fraction of the altitude of where sprites occur in the atmosphere.
This rare phenomenon was captured by nature photographer Paul Smith on two occasions over the past week when severe thunderstorms rumbled over the central U.S. Smith has been specializing in night photography since 2015, capturing mesmerizing images of the aurora, thunderstorms at night and red sprites.

Although sprites are bright and significantly larger than typical lightning bolts, they are seldom seen.
“Red sprites are difficult to observe because they last for just a few milliseconds and occur above thunderstorms -- meaning they are usually blocked from view on the ground by the very clouds that produce them,” NASA said on its website.
“They are rarely seen with the human eye, so they are most often imaged with highly sensitive cameras,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains in an article exploring various types of lightning.
Sprites are so large and emit so much energy that cameras and instruments on the International Space Station (ISS), which orbits about 250 miles above the Earth's surface, are able to detect them. Lightning research conducted in space originally helped scientists verify the existence of sprites 30 years ago.
For decades, pilots had reported large flashes of light extending high above thunderstorms, but their reports were largely discounted by the scientific community until the late 1980s.
In 1989, researchers at the University of Minnesota accidentally photographed sprites above a distant thunderstorm while using low-light cameras. Later that year, the existence of sprites was confirmed by instruments flying aboard Space Shuttle Discovery.
According to NASA, “in October 1989, Otha 'Skeet' Vaughan of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and scientists working on the Mesoscale Lightning Observation Experiment were able to verify the existence of these electrical discharges with their instrument on space shuttle flight STS-34.”
Further research was conducted on additional space shuttle missions and from the ISS, which included the use of low-light cameras to photograph the phenomenon above thunderstorms around the globe.

People hoping to capture an image of sprites for themselves need the proper equipment and a bit of luck. A low-light camera, such as a DSLR, a tripod, and the right perspective of a thunderstorm are needed to photograph a sprite.
“Viewers on the ground can photograph sprites by looking out on a thunderstorm in the distance, often looking out from high mountainsides over storms in lower plains,” NASA explained.
However, sprites do not occur during every thunderstorm, so it may take several attempts to capture the elusive phenomonen in a photograph.
Anyone attempting to photograph lightning should do so with caution and from a safe distance as to not be in danger of being struck by lighting. Most lightning strikes close to a thunderstorm, but some bolts can strike over 10 miles away without warning.

May 2019: 3 things stargazers should look for in the night sky

The nights may be growing shorter, but the milder May weather is enticing people to spend more time under the stars.
The upcoming month will feature a variety of astronomical events, including a major meteor shower and a type of full moon that is only seen once every few years.
Here are three astronomy events to mark on your calendar throughout May:
1. Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower
When: May 4-5
A multi-month meteor shower drought came to an end in late April with the peak of the Lyrids, but the nearly full moon hindered viewing conditions. This month’s meteor shower will put on a more impressive light show than the Lyrids, especially for those in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Eta Aquarid meteor shower peaks during the first weekend of May and is visible as the Earth passes through a field of debris left behind by the famous Comet Halley.
The night of Saturday, May 4, into the early morning of Sunday, May 5, will be the best time to view the meteor shower, not only because it is the peak of the shower but also because it falls on the same night as a new moon, meaning there will be no moonlight to disrupt your view.
The Eta Aquarid shower favors the Southern Hemisphere where onlookers can expect around 40 meteors per hour, according to the International Meteor Organization (IMO).
“From the equator northward, they usually only produce medium rates of 10-30 per hour just before dawn,” the IMO said on their website.
Shooting stars associated with the Eta Aquarids should also be visible on the nights surrounding its peak, but the number of meteors visible per hour will not be as high as the peak night.
2. Blue Moon
When: May 18
A Blue Moon will rise in mid-May around the world, but it's not the type of Blue Moon that many are familiar with.
There are two types of Blue Moons. The most well-known definition is the second full moon in a calendar month. However, May’s full moon falls under the alternate definition.
“One season typically has three full moons. If a season has four full moons, then the third full moon may be called a Blue Moon,” The Old Farmer’s Almanac explained on its website.
On average, Blue Moons only happen once every two or three years, giving birth to the phrase ‘once in a Blue Moon.’

The Blue Moon will rise on Saturday, May 18, around the globe, although it will not actually appear blue.
May’s full moon is also known as the Full Hare Moon, the Flower Moon, the Budding Moon and the Flower Moon.
3. Jupiter, Moon and Saturn to align
When: May 21
The two largest planets in our solar system will align with the Moon before Memorial Day weekend.
Stargazers can find Jupiter, the moon and Saturn lined up in the southern sky during the early morning hours of May 21. The three should be high enough in the sky by 1 a.m. local time for onlookers to spot.

Folks that miss the celestial alignment can see a similar sight the following night as the moon shifts closer to Saturn.
No telescope is needed to see the planets as they are easy to spot with the unaided eye, but folks with a telescope can focus on Jupiter to spot some of the planet’s largest moons or zoom in on Saturn to see its legendary rings.
Looking back at April
April was filled with major scientific discoveries, not only in our system, but across the universe. On Wednesday, April 10, astronomers released the first-ever image of a black hole. Closer to home, NASA’s InSight lander detected a ‘marsquake,’ the first time a tremor has been detected on another planet.

On April 11, after several weather-related delays, SpaceX launched its Falcon Heavy rocket. This was only the second time that the rocket has been launched, and the first time that it was used to send a satellite into orbit around the Earth. All three of the rocket’s first stage boosters landed back on Earth, but the one that landed out at sea did not back to back to land intact.
The Lyrid meteor shower peaked during the early morning of April 22, coinciding with Earth Day. This was the first major meteor shower anywhere in the globe since the Quadrantids during the first days of January. The International Space Station also made incredibly bright passes over the northeastern United States, outshining every star and planet in the sky.

An EF3 tornado took the lives of two people in Ruston, Louisiana, this week amid an outbreak of severe weather.
The town, located in the northern part of the state, suffered extensive damage from the twister, which packed winds up to 165 mph.
"It's bad, real bad," Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker told the local paper, The News Star. "We took a direct hit."
The victims were identified as Kendra Butler, 34, and her 14-year-old son, Remington Butler. The two were killed when a tree fell through their home.
Trained spotters and law enforcement also confirmed significant damage to the campus of Louisiana Tech. The university announced on Twitter Thursday morning that the school was closed as a result of the tornado. Schools throughout Lincoln Parish announced they would be closed Thursday.
At least 16,000 people lost power throughout the state.

The tornado came from the same system that produced significant, deadly flooding earlier in the week.
Three people were killed after they drove their vehicle through floodwaters and were swept away south of Dublin, Texas.
Drenching rain fell across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, even at a rate of 1.50 inches per hour at one point on Tuesday.
At least a dozen cars parked at a Dallas Love Field Airport garage were completely submerged in water. The Fort Worth police department carried out at least 20 high-water rescues during the storm.
Meanwhile, residents across California and much of the Southwest endured their first significant heat wave of the year.
In Fresno, California, Phoenix and Las Vegas, temperatures climbed into the 90s on Wednesday. Death Valley, California, surged above the century mark Tuesday, with a high of 102 F. By Thursday, Death Valley had climbed to 109.
Winter weather has held firm in some areas of the country, with spots in New England and Alaska receiving fresh snow this week.
In Caribou, Maine, a 163-day streak came to an end when there was finally less than an inch of snow on the ground on April 21, breaking a record set during the 2002-2003 snow season.
It was the longest record of its kind; the foot of snow that's fallen so far in April helped to maintain the streak.

Some 3,000 miles away in Anchorage, Alaska, a snowfall record that has stood for more than half a century was toppled on Tuesday.
Alaska’s most populated city was blanketed in measurable snow for the seventh day in a row, the latest stretch of snowy days in the city’s history.
A heat wave in India swelled to dangerous levels this week.
Temperatures soared in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday as a new high temperature was set for the year in New Delhi when the mercury reached 43 C (109 F).
India endures lengthy heat waves each year prior to monsoon season. This heat arrived earlier than normal than recent years, putting more people at risk for heat-related illnesses. More than 6,000 heat-related deaths have been reported in India since 2010, according to the Times of India.
Heavy rainfall turned roadways into raging rivers in parts of eastern South Africa Monday night into Tuesday, killing 70.
The number of deaths may continue to rise as rescue crews work to dig through debris from mudslides and floodwaters continue to surge through the area.
Durban was one of the hardest-hit areas with more than 6 inches (150 mm) falling on the city within a 12-hour period. Normal rainfall for the entire month of April is only around 3.5 inches (90 mm).
The flooding resulted in damaged homes, collapsed walls and mudslides across the Durban area.
At least 28 people were killed in a landslide in the southwestern Colombian province of Cauca, according to BBC News.
The landslide, which was caused by heavy rain, occurred early Sunday morning in Rosas, a municipality in the Cauca department.
A large part of a mountain broke off, burying at least eight houses, the country’s disaster relief agency reported.
