A winter storm will bring freezing rain, sleet and snow to the mid-Atlantic and Northeast this weekend, where it will impact travel conditions and potentially bring damaging ice accumulations.
This system has been named Winter Storm Tabitha by The Weather Channel. Before Tabitha spreads this wintry mess into the East, it spread widespread snow to the Pacific Northwest and is now spreading light snow across the central Plains.
Ice could be the most significant impact from this system, especially in parts of the mid-Atlantic. Snowfall accumulations in the Northeast will be on the light side for most areas.
Ice storm warnings and winter storm warnings have been issued in parts of Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina where ice is expected to cause power outages, tree damage and dangerous travel conditions.
Forecast Timing
Saturday
Scattered freezing rain is likely early Saturday morning from northern North Carolina into southern Virginia and the Delmarva peninsula. This freezing rain may become more persistent by sunrise, and expand northward as far north as the District of Columbia as a weak low pressure system develops in the Atlantic.
Low pressure will spread moisture over the top of low-level cold air in place to the east of the Appalachians in the mid-Atlantic on Saturday.
This will result in the development of freezing rain and sleet from northern North Carolina northward through much of Virginia into the District of Columbia, parts of Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey much of the day. Freezing rain accumulations could be significant in parts of this region, particularly in Virginia and Maryland.
Freezing rain and sleet are also possible from Mississippi to Kentucky.
Light to locally moderate snow could is possible from the Great Lakes into the northern mid-Atlantic.
Saturday Night-Sunday Morning
Freezing rain will continue Saturday night from central Virginia to southern New Jersey, spreading as far north as New York City, Long Island and Providence Saturday night as a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow.
Light snowfall will expand across the Northeast to include much of New York and New England.
This storm will wind down on Sunday, but some wintry weather could linger into the morning from the northern mid-Atlantic into New England.
Ice and Snow Forecast
Throughout this weekend and into early next week, areas from northern North Carolina into parts of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, southeast Pennsylvania and New Jersey could pick up at least enough ice to make untreated roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, slippery.
There is the possibility that ice accumulations could be heavy enough to damage trees and knock out power in some locations, especially in Virginia. The greatest chance of seeing those impacts is in the darker purple shaded areas of the map below, but keep in mind this forecast could change.
Snowfall accumulations will be on the light side for most areas, as depicted in the forecast below.
A dusting to a few inches of snow could blanket areas from parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes into Pennsylvania, New York and New England.
