Winter Storm Closes Schools, Cancels Flights in North Carolina, Virginia; Officials Warn of Hazardous Road Conditions

Dozens of school districts are closed or started late today and hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed as a winter storm moved across parts of North Carolina and Virginia.
Officials warned drivers of hazardous travel in some areas, especially during the Thursday evening and Friday morning commute times.
“We want to them to use extreme caution, just to be mindful of ice conditions," Alana Smith of the Norfolk Department of Public Works told The Weather Channel. "Again, bridges and overpasses freeze first.”
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said drivers should avoid travel if conditions deteriorate.
“We’re also encouraging people, if they do have a fender bender on the road, if they can get their car off the road as soon as they possibly can," Cooper said. "That’s important because it prevents secondary collisions.”
Officials also told residents to prepare for power outages. More than 13,000 customers were without power in North Carolina as of 8 a.m. Friday, according to poweroutage.us.
Traffic along Interstate 40 just west of Raleigh, North Carolina, slows to a crawl as a wintry mix falls Thursday afternoon, Feb. 20, 2020.
Dozens of school districts canceled classes or dismissed early on Thursday, and announced similar measures for Friday.
In North Carolina, schools are closed or delayed Friday in several districts, including Durham Public Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools as well as Wake, Cumberland, Bladen, Halifax, Johnston and Moore counties, according to WCNC-TV.
Classes at North Carolina State University before 10 a.m. Friday are canceled.
Virginia Beach Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Friday, according to WAVY-TV. Old Dominion University shut down at 3 p.m. Thursday and will remain closed until 1 p.m. Friday.
More than 220 flights to and from Charlotte Douglas International Airport were canceled and more than 300 delayed Thursday, according to flightaware.com. At least 21 flights were canceled at Raleigh-Durham and more than 40 were delayed.
The FAA also warned of possible delays in Atlanta from the storm, which has been named Winter Storm Nash by The Weather Channel.
American Airlines is waiving change fees at Charlotte and 10 other airports in North Carolina and Virginia.
Parts of both states are under winter storm warnings or winter weather advisories. Advisories have also been issued for parts of Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina.
