9 Killed After 5.7 Earthquake Rattles Iran and Turkey Border Region

At least nine people were killed and dozens more were injured after a strong earthquake rattled the border region between western Iran and eastern Turkey on Sunday morning.
The 5.7 magnitude earthquake was centered in a mountainous area of western Iran, but it also caused significant damage across the border in the Turkish province of Van, the Associated Press reported.

Four villages were affected by the earthquake in Van. Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu said seven of the deaths occurred in Ozpinar village, according to the AP.
There have been 37 confirmed injuries in eastern Turkey, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said. At least 75 injuries have been reported in western Iran, the AP reported Iran's official IRNA news agency said.
Turkish television showed people digging through collapsed buildings. Fearing aftershocks, families sat outside in the cold, snowy streets. The EMSC reported several further quakes that measured up to magnitude 4.4.
The seven deaths happened in Ozpinar, one of four villages affected by the quake. Soylu said 1,066 buildings collapsed.
A second magnitude 6 earthquake struck about 11 a.m. EST in the same location.
