Super Tuesday Forecast: Democrat candidates rival while some voters will battle weather

WEATHER NEWS Updated Feb. 29, 2020 3:42 PM

As Democratic candidates battle to become the selected presidential candidate, some voters may have to rival stormy weather at the polls.
Ahead of next week’s Super Tuesday, there is a tight race between U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and the former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, reported by the latest polling data aggregated by the website FiveThirtyEight.
The Texas results show Sanders has the most support among likely primary voters, according to the Real Clear Politics, but wet weather and thunderstorms in Texas could potentially affect voter turnout and election results.

Research conducted by AccuWeather shows a link between weather conditions and voter turnout, which impacts election results. AccuWeather found that uncomfortable conditions, such as frigid or hot and muggy weather, can deter swing voters in a 2016 analysis of overall weather trends and voting data, utilizing L2 as a resource.
Additionally, women were found to be more sensitive to cold conditions than men, and younger voters, aged 18 to 24, have higher turnout rates when the weather is sunny and warm.
California, Colorado, Utah
Mostly dry and tranquil conditions will prevail across California, Utah, and Colorado as Americans head out to the polls.
“Temperatures will be slightly above normal across California, some locations in the interior SoCal will be in the lower 80s, 70s will be across the interior valleys in northern parts,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys said.
Thermometers will show temperatures to be near normal across Utah in the 40s and lower 50s, forecasters predict.
“For Colorado, the temperature will be in the low to mid-50s in the eastern part of the state, while 40s and low 50s will be in western Colorado with 30s in the mountains,” Roys said.
Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont
The storm system that is plaguing the mid-Atlantic into the Deep South and southern Plains will begin to move into New England during the afternoon on Tuesday with some rain arriving during those afternoon hours across Massachusetts and southern Vermont. It might be best for voters in that area to arrive at the polls early.
“The steadiest rain looks to be across western Massachusetts including Springfield and Pittsfield, while places like Worcester, Boston, Plymouth, Lowel, and Rawsonville will see some light rain move in,” Roys said.
However, forecasters said the incoming rain should not impact those going to vote. Those heading out to vote in Northern Vermont into Maine will be dry, but there will be limited amounts of sunshine.
“It will be mild with temperatures in the 50s to around 60 in Massachusetts. Those lower 50s will extend into southern Vermont into southern and coastal Maine. The rest of Maine and Vermont will be in the mid to upper 40,” Roys said.
Minnesota
Those heading out to vote in Minnesota may need to get out their shovels because snow will spread across the northern section of the state, especially in the northeast including Duluth, Baudette, and International Falls.
Many locations will see a coating to an inch or two, according to Roys. Untreated paved surfaces will be slippery and could lead to treacherous travel. The rest of Minnesota will be mostly dry with more clouds than sun.
“Temperatures will be mid- to low 30s across central and northern Minnesota, with upper 30s to lower 40s across southern Minnesota including Minneapolis-St. Paul, Mankato and Rochester,” Roys said.
Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia
Wet weather will dominate much of central Texas through Virginia on Tuesday, which could cause some voters to get wet if lines are extremely long. Rain will be pestering voters across north-central Texas, including southern and southeastern Oklahoma, through central and eastern Tennessee.
“Some of this rain will be heavy at times and could also contain thunder across northeastern Texas and Arkansas. Localized flooding is a possibility, given the recent flooding and how many rivers are still swollen,” Roys said.
Any river that is running high and gets a lot of rain in a short amount of time will easily lead to flash flooding compared to normal.
Thunderstorms will pummel areas across south-central Texas into Alabama. Some of these storms could be strong to severe across southeastern Texas, according to Roys, as these storms will have the ability to produce flash flooding and damaging winds.
Drivers should remember to turn around if they see any flooded roadways.
Showers will spread across Virginia, with a steadier rain across far southwestern parts of the state, Roys explained. The majority of Southern Texas will be dry with a mix of sun and clouds. The rest of Oklahoma will be largely dry with more clouds than sun.

Tips for exercising outdoor in the humidity

When the humidity is high in your region, it is difficult to exercise outside your home. There are a few ways to make the physical activity safer and more comfortable. Here are some of the tips that are recommended by athletes and health care experts to make exercise easier when it is humid.

Exercise Earlier in the Day

If the humidity is high in your region, then it will usually drop at night, so you can plan an early morning physical outdoor activity. Great choices are a brisk walk, jogging, and running, but you may prefer to ride a bicycle. When you begin your workout just as the sun is rising, you will enjoy cooler temperatures and less humidity.

Wear Natural Fabrics

It is better to wear natural fabrics when it is humid so that the perspiration on your skin can evaporate quickly. Look for cotton-rich shirts and shorts to wear while you are having a workout. Avoid wearing tight clothing that won't permit proper air circulation because this will make you feel hotter and more uncomfortable.

Keep Your Hair Away from Your Face and Neck

If you have longer hair, then keep it away from your face and neck so that you will remain cooler while exercising. You can tie your hair back, or you can wear a hat. When you choose to wear a hat, make sure that it has a mesh crown that permits air to flow around the top of your head.

Drink a Lot of Water

To remain cooler in humid conditions, you must drink a lot of water. Begin drinking water as soon as you wake up, but remember that coffee or tea contains caffeine that will lead to increased urination. If you want to enjoy a caffeinated beverage, then wait until later in the day after you have cooled off from your exercise routine.

Plan a Shorter Workout Routine

When it is humid, you may need to plan a shorter workout routine to avoid feeling dehydrated or ill. You could have a morning routine outside, along with another workout at night. If you plan to exercise after it is dark, then use additional precautions, such as making sure that you are visible to others.

Take Frequent Breaks

While exercising outside when it is humid, make sure to take frequent breaks. Find a shady spot to sit for a few minutes to cool off before you continue a bicycle ride or a walk. Bring along a bottle of water so that you can replenish your body's fluids.

Consume a Nutritious Diet

Don’t try to exercise without eating a nutritious diet, but also, you shouldn’t perform a strenuous physical activity right after eating a meal. By consuming a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, you can hydrate your body so prevent the problems that are caused by muscle cramps.

Stabilize Your Body’s Electrolytes

The electrolyte balance in your body will change when the weather is hot and humid. When you sweat, you will also lose chemicals that regulate your body’s responses. You can avoid cramping from muscle spasms by drinking sports drinks that contain certain ingredients.

Learn How to Breathe During Exercise

Breathing through both the nose and mouth at even intervals, and keeping a rhythm allows you to pace yourself. Avoid holding your breath and slow your pace if you find that you’re unable to catch your breath. Slow, even, deep breaths is the key. Proper breathing will enable you to be more comfortable, increase blood flow, and maintain focus.

Tips for the perfect morning routine in summer

HEALTH Updated Feb. 28, 2020 3:33 PM

Kids, traffic, work deadlines, and every other stressful life event always seems to culminate in the morning. Exactly when you’re in a rush to head out, something will break, a child will cry, or coffee will spill. What if there was a way to prevent the most problematic and frustrating things from happening? It all starts with a little planning, and some time spent organizing your morning before it even gets a chance to sneak up on you.
We’ve all heard the morning mantras, “Early to bed, early to rise,” “The early bird gets the worm,” and so many more. That’s because the morning hours are some of the most important hours of your entire day. The morning is where the root of productivity, energy, and positivity stems from. By having a solid start to your morning, you can kickstart a prosperous rest of your day. How can you ensure a smooth go in the early hours? Let’s dive into some of the tips you can use to get you there.

Check the weather

The weather can easily make or break your day in one quick swoop. Although it is never possible to know exactly what the clouds, wind, and temperatures will do, having a rough gauge on what might happen can save you plenty of stress. Check the local weather for current conditions and the daily forecast each morning. You can better plan your outfits, whether you should bring your umbrella, what your outdoor activities will look like, and so much more. Staying in-the-know will help you avoid getting rained on, wearing the wrong shoes, or even when to cancel your outdoor lunch plans. Mother Nature can be your greatest ally, or she can quite literally rain on your parade. Plan accordingly in the morning and avoid the mishaps.

Start with exercise

One of the most beneficial ways to start your morning is by getting physical. By revving your engine early on, you can power up your body with more energy and enthusiasm to take on the day. The great part is that your options are limitless. A brisk jog around the neighborhood, laps around a pool, pumping iron at the local gym, a bike ride, or any other activity is a great way to get going. By getting your body going early, it can fuel your energy levels for the whole day and even carry you through the mid-afternoon slump.

Power up with a hearty breakfast

With so much going on at the start of the day, getting a good breakfast in your belly may be easier said than done. Breakfast is a great way to provide your body with the energy it needs. This will help you concentrate during those seemingly endless meetings, keep you pushing forward until lunch, and even boost your short-term memory. A balanced meal containing protein to keep you satiated, carbs to energize your body, and fiber to benefit your digestive system can make the difference between making it to your 1 pm meeting and snoozing at your desk.

Set up your intentions for the day

Each morning is a fresh start and a renewed chance to make it a successful day. One of the best ways to set the tone for the day is by setting your intentions bright and early. With a clear picture and goals put in place, you are more likely to accomplish more meaningful activities and cross more off your to-do list. By setting aside time to establish your daily goals, you can be more organized in how you get things done. Make your list specific down to the how and when and narrow down your focus on exactly what needs to get completed to avoid being sidetracked and distracted by not having direction. At the end of the day, take a moment to acknowledge what you were able to do and set up your next morning goals with the same intention you did the previous day.

Stick to your commitments

Before the day gets ahead of you, the morning is the optimal time to establish that you will stick to your commitments. Meetings, phone calls, lunch dates, appointments, and everything else that falls within your day can quickly get away from you if concentrated efforts aren’t made to keep them. By sticking to those commitments right off the bat, it can dictate how your day goes.

Portion of I-80 closed after crash amid regional snow squalls

WINTER WEATHER Updated Feb. 29, 2020 8:55 PM

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) issued a warning to motorists at 11:41 a.m. EST on Feb. 29, that I-80 eastbound was closed between Penfield and Clearfield exit around mile marker 111. The closure came after an incident with at least one jackknifed tractor trailer.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Rob Miller said at the time of the incident, snow squalls were occurring in the area. In a video captured of the jackknifed tractor-trailer, visibility is seen to be low, and snow covered the ground.
"Snow squalls are intense bursts of snow, similar to how thunderstorms work in the summertime by producing heavy rates of snowfall," Miller said.
Snowfall rates were at least half an inch to 1 inch per hour, Miller said, and locally could be higher. Because snow is falling so fast, it creates white-out conditions during the day, dropping visibility to almost zero miles.
Snow squalls also produce wind gusts that can reach 30-35 mph, which causes the snow to blow around, contributing to the low visibility, according to Miller.
He said snow squalls can result in dangerous roadway conditions.
"In addition to not being able to see, due to the low visibility, roadways can quickly go from being dry to snow covered, causing slippery road conditions," Miller said.
The closure was cleared at 12:34 p.m. EST.
