Snow, Ice and Rain Will Spread From Midwest to the East Through This Weekend

weather.com meteorologistsPublished: January 24, 2020

A slow-moving storm system will cause travel delays as it brings snow, ice and rain to parts of the Midwest and East through this weekend.

Happening Now

The storm is currently spreading light snow across the Great Lakes region.
More widespread rain is wapping in from the Carolinas to the eastern Great Lakes and Ohio Valley.
Current Radar
The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories from northern Illinois into southern Wisconsin. Temperatures are marginally cold enough for snow, sleet and freezing rain, which could cut down on the potential for accumulations during the daytime. But the precipitation will be hazardous for travelers at times.
Winter weather advisories have also been posted for portions of eastern Pennsylvania, eastern New York, northwestern New Jersey and eastern Vermont where freezing rain may cause slippery travel Saturday morning.
Winter Weather Alerts
Below is a general look at the forecast.

Forecast Timing

Saturday
The storm will move to the Eastern Seaboard by Saturday where temperatures will be too mild for widespread snow and ice.
Rain is expected along much of the Interstate 95 corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C.
Most interior areas of the Northeast will also see rain initially, but higher elevations might have some snow and/or ice. Colder air will wrap into the storm on Saturday night, which could allow snowfall to develop from West Virginia to western Pennsylvania, upstate New York and northern New England.
Snow showers, or rain changing to snow, could continue as far west as the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley into Saturday night.
Saturday's Forecast
Sunday
The storm will conclude its cross-country journey in the Northeast on Sunday.
Light to locally moderate snowfall is possible from the central Appalachians into upstate New York and northern New England.

How Much Snow?

Below is a forecast showing which areas from the Midwest, Great Lakes and Northeast might pick up accumulating snow through Sunday. As mentioned earlier, temperatures are marginally cold enough for snow, so that makes the snowfall accumulation forecast more uncertain in many areas.
Overall, this appears to be a modest snow event in the Midwest, with most areas picking up less than 6 inches, but spread out over multiple days.
In the Northeast, accumulating snow is most likely from West Virginia to western and northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and northern New England. The most significant accumulations will be in the higher terrain.
