First Winter Storm of 2020 Will Bring Snow to West and Midwest But Will Be Mostly Wet for the East

Chris DolcePublished: December 31 (New Year's Eve),2019

The orange contours show that many areas in the East will have above average temperatures on Friday. A storm system will produce rain in most locations in the East since cold air is lacking. Some snow is possible in portions of the Midwest, however.
The first widespread storm of 2020 will bring snow to parts of the West, but mild temperatures will likely prevent it from producing widespread wintry weather in many areas of the central and eastern United States.
This weather system has been named Winter Storm Henry by The Weather Channel.
A jet stream disturbance will bring snow to the Intermountain West into Thursday. That energy and a separate weather disturbance will trigger the development of a low-pressure system, which will track from the Southern Plains to the Great Lakes late this week.
With such little cold air to work with, the storm system will initially produce widespread rain in many areas of the central and eastern U.S. as opposed to snow or ice.
Colder air will eventually wrap into the storm over the Midwest and allow snow, or rain changing to snow, to develop in portions of that region.

West Forecast

Snow will spread from the Cascades of Oregon and Washington into Utah's Wasatch and the northern and central Rockies through New Year's Day. Some of this snowfall could linger in the Rockies into Thursday.
The snow will fall down to valley floors in parts of the interior West.
Salt Lake City could pick up 4 to 8 inches of snow into Thursday. This will impact travel on interstates 15, 80 and 84 in northern Utah.
Some higher elevations in the northern and central Rockies could receive a foot or more of snow from this storm through Thursday.
Rain and Snow Forecast

Midwest and East Forecast

Thursday
On Thursday, the storm system will move into the central U.S., where temperatures are forecast to be significantly above average for early January.
Rain is expected from the South into the mid-Mississippi and Ohio valleys.
A band of light snow, or rain changing to snow, might develop Thursday night from northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri to parts of Iowa, southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
Thursday's Forecast
Friday
Widespread rain is expected throughout much of the East on Friday, including as far north as southern Maine and parts of upstate New York.
Any snow or ice in the East will be pinned to northern New England. But some of those areas could eventually change to rain as well.
Colder air will wrap into the backside of this storm and produce a band of snow from northeastern Kansas and northern Missouri to the upper Mississippi Valley and northern Great Lakes.
The area of rain changing to show could spread into much of Illinois, western Indiana and Lower Michigan Friday night.
Snowfall accumulations in most of these areas should be light.
Friday's Forecast
Saturday
The area of low pressure will move farther east as the weekend begins, with colder air continuing to wrap in behind the storm system.
That will allow snow, or rain changing to snow, to spread from parts of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley to possibly as far south as the Tennessee Valley. Rain is expected along the East Coast.
Snowfall could develop from the southern and central Appalachians to upstate New York and northern New England by Saturday night.
Saturday's Forecast
