Pair of storms to bring rain, chilly winds to the UK through the weekend

Updated Nov. 7, 2019 9:20 AM

In what has already been a wet start to the month so far across much of the United Kingdom, a couple of storm systems will bring more rain to the country through the weekend.
While neither storm is expected to rise to the level of a windstorm, the persistent rain will bring the threat of travel delays and gusty winds.
There will also be localized flooding, especially in areas that have already received significant rainfall over the past week.
On Thursday, the United Kingdom Met Office issued an amber warning for rain across portions of northern England. This warning lasts until Friday morning and covers an area between Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield. The Office warns that flooding to homes and businesses is likely.
A yellow warning for rain is in place elsewhere across a large portion of northern England.
The worst of the weather will come through Thursday night then again from Saturday into Sunday morning as the two storms move across the British Isles.
Rainfall amounts of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) are likely through Sunday across England and Wales, with locally higher amounts in areas that get more persistent downpours. Rainfall will generally be under 25 mm (1 inch) across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Snow will fall across the Scottish Highlands, which will lead to slippery and slow travel in some areas. Even in some of the highest elevations of northern England, some settling snow could be seen over the weekend.
Winds will be gusty at times through the end of the week. Top winds of 40-50 mph (65-80 km/h) are expected from southern Scotland through northern portions of England and Wales.
With the weekend's storm, gusty wind will largely be confined to Wales and southwestern England. Gusts, however, should not be strong enough to cause damage.

This rain is going to add on to what has already been a wet month across the U.K. During the first five days of the month, the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, has already received 54 mm (2.13 inches) of rain, which is nearly the average rainfall for the entire month of November. Through Thursday, rain had been recorded for 11 straight days.
Edinburgh is already more than 100 mm (4 inches) above the average annual rainfall with nearly two months to go in the year, thanks to a wet late summer and autumn.
Another 6-13 mm (0.25-0.50 of an inch) of rain is expected in the city into the weekend.
In addition to the unsettled weather, the air will be on the chilly side for early November. Temperatures across much of the U.K. will be running about 3 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) below average each day through the weekend.
There will not be much of a pattern change into next week, with the potential for more storms and more rainy spells.
