Tropical Depression 10 joins Humberto in Atlantic

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Tropical Depression Ten formed in the central Atlantic on Tuesday morning, the latest in a series of systems cranked out by the Atlantic.
The depression could strengthen into the tenth named storm of the 2019 season, which peaked just days ago on Sept. 10. If it is named, it would acquire the next name on the Atlantic list, Jerry.
Further strengthening into a hurricane is forecast as it moves over the warm water of the basin while approaching the Leeward Islands, according to AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski.
"The evolving tropical feature is projected to pass just east and north of the Leeward Islands on Friday," he added.
As of 5 p.m. EDT Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said the system was about 1,100 miles east of the Leeward Islands and moving west-northwest at 10 mph with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph.
This image, taken during Tuesday midday, Sept. 17, 2019, shows much of the tropical Atlantic Basin. Africa can be seen to the right and South America is visible to the lower center. The feature of interest is a patch of clouds in the middle and slightly closer to South America than Africa. Hurricane Humberto can be seen over the upper left of center.(NOAA/GOES-East)
"Early indications suggest this feature will track east of the United States mainland, but it is way too early to say with confidence as to exactly where it will track beyond Friday," Kottlowski said.
Interests over the Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of this feature for an uptick in showers and thunderstorms late this week.
Even if the feature were to pass north of the Leewards, a plume of tropical moisture with drenching showers and gusty thunderstorms may extend south of the center and pass through the islands.
As the track is uncertain, interests in the Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas and Bermuda should watch this system as it evolves.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic, a rapidly strengthening system in the Gulf of Mexico developed into a tropical depression and then an hour later was named Tropical Storm Imelda on Tuesday. Imelda is expected to unleash flooding rainfall in and around Houston, Texas, this week. Meanwhile, Hurricane Humberto is forecast to pass close to Bermuda during the middle of this week as a Category 2 or Category 3 hurricane.

In addition to Humberto, there are several other areas of interest that forecasters are monitoring.
Swells propagating southward from this distant hurricane can reach unprotected northern shores of the northern Caribbean islands in the form of large waves and strong rip currents this week.
